'Bigger Thomas A Tragic Hero Essay\r'
'bigger doubting doubting doubting doubting doubting doubting doubting Thomas as a Tragic Hero\r\nWhen analyzing big Thomas, Richard Wrightââ¬â¢s take reach rocket in the fresh homegrown watchword, unmatch adequate to(p) must keep back into consideration the develop handst of his graphemeization. being a poor twenty-year-old B want opus in the south side of Chicago bearing-time with his family in a cramped one- sleeping accommodation apartment in the 1930ââ¬â¢s, the odds of him well-fixed in support were non in his favor. Fil direct with oppression, violence, and catastrophe, large Thomasââ¬â¢ worldner was doomed from the moment he was born. by representation of and through and through the novel, larger divulges his proclaim dreams to provide for his family and to be anything but a ââ¬Å"nobody.ââ¬Â Although bigger struggled to support through obstacles to pursue his dreams for the future, his chase for a better a persistness came to an abrupt g ritty afterwards the sad accidental pip of his employerââ¬â¢s flannel daughter. bigger Thomas fits the definition of a tragic hired gun, considering he is the jockstrap of Native Son that experiences disaster throughout the novel. Along with t cultdy, big excessively undergoes mixture as the novel progresses. By the end biggerââ¬â¢s livelihood story, he is adequate to(p) to motley into a man that is no longer consumed through the consternation in his heart. callable to his characteristics, large Thomas send away be comp atomic number 18d to Willy Loman in Arthur milling machineââ¬â¢s Death of a Salesman. Both characters are tragic heroes that are related by their struggles through tragedy and switch overs they undergo throughout their lives. By compare the two characters, one can change integrity the importance of two characters because of their tragedies they experience.\r\nIn the antecedent of Native Sonââ¬â¢s carry got one: reverence, one is ab le to find out that larger Thomasââ¬â¢s draw looms in the hands of his environment. He did non choose to live a bearing of poverty in the ââ¬Å"Black belt outââ¬Â of south side Chicago. This lifetime was agonistic upon him. On page 20 of the novel, signal occurs as large chats with his friend Gus or so his future. He says, ââ¬Å"Every time I get to thinking about me organism smutty and they organism duster, me being hither and they being there, I live worry something awfulââ¬â¢s going to legislate to meââ¬Â (Wright 20). He displays a defeatist view that he further explains as he talks to Gus. He explains his reasoning as he questions, ââ¬Å"Why they piddle us live in one boxwood of the city? Why adoptââ¬â¢t they let us fly planes and hasten ships?ââ¬Â(Wright 20). As a result of this conversation, the reviewer is able to identify that bigger goes through his life touch sensation defeated. He has minimum hope for his future as he lives in idolize that something awful leave happen to him out-of-pocket to the colouring material of his undress and where he lives. Although one may entreat that bigger is a negative soulfulness who uses the color of his skin to on the dotify his evils, this is non the case considering large end littlely is suppress by his environment and lacks options in his life. The dust coat people that surround larger represent him no hope to prosper therefrom cr eat a tragic existence from the start. It is not until large gets a mull bye from a rich white philanthropist, Mr. Dalton that his life may be able to magic spell around for the better. regrettably for bigger, this opportunity does just the opposite.\r\n dapple pass judgment a blood line as a chauffer for the Dalton family, larger becomes cheerful about his current situation. alternatively of eer letting his mother and siblings down, he is instantly able to provide for them through this job by granting them $20 from hi s salary individually week. Although the job acquired little skill, large was well-to-do that through this job, he could be less of a ââ¬Å"nobody.ââ¬Â darn reflecting on this young chapter in his life, larger expressed, ââ¬Å"This would be an open life. Everything was all right, except that girlââ¬Â (Wright 59). The girl that worried larger was bloody shame Dalton, Mr. Daltonââ¬â¢s free spirited daughter that ever challenged largeââ¬â¢s patience and authority. Their primary encounter left Bigger questioning of bloody shame Daltonââ¬â¢s motives. By their min encounter, Bigger was blatantly apprehensionful that bloody shame would cause him to lose his job. During their second encounter, Bigger is baseball clubed to chauffer Miss Dalton to the University for her nightly class. Unfortunately to Biggerââ¬â¢s surprise, Miss Dalton has some other set of plans. She tells Bigger, ââ¬Å"I think I can trust youââ¬Â (Wright 64) in order to toy with his emotions and disobey his bossââ¬â¢ orders as Bigger, bloody shame, and Maryââ¬â¢s commie fellow Jan Erlone take the car out for a night in the loop. aft(prenominal) a rousing unconstipateding on the township filled with booze and conversations about socialism that left Bigger offended and hangdog to be char, it became Biggerââ¬â¢s concern to make sure that Mary was determined safely in her bed after being withal intoxicated to stalling on her own. Because Bigger strives to obey his boss, he feels inclined to personally place Mary in her own room in order to avoid trouble. This presentations that Bigger Thomas took Mary to her bedroom with no innovation of causing any p pridelems in his reinvigorated workplace reminding the reader that Bigger is not an evil military personnel being, just a convergence of his environment. After being in Maryââ¬â¢s bedroom, Bigger immovable to overstay his welcome due to his mirthful arousal with white women. To Biggerââ¬â ¢s surprise, ââ¬Å"a hysterical terror seized himââ¬Â (Wright 85) as Mrs. Dalton makes an appearance in Maryââ¬â¢s bedroom to check on her daughter. Bigger automatically assumed that if he was caught in Mary Daltonââ¬â¢s bedroom at an odd hour of the night he would be immediately fired and incriminate of raping a white woman that could prostitute his already tragic life forever. Due to her blindness, Bigger was not seen immediately, but he carry outd if Mary kept mumbling, Mrs. Dalton would make her style to the bed and eventually feel Bigger laying next to her. turn out of slight apprehension, Bigger reacts irrationally as he suffocates Mary Dalton with a deception in order to keep her quiet. Fear is what provoked the irrational response that killed Mary Dalton and turned Bigger Thomasââ¬â¢ life into a series of tragic events. In Malcolm Cowleyââ¬â¢s scholarly article, Richard Wright: The face of Bigger Thomas, he reminds the reader that despite his infa tuated actions towards Mary Dalton, he is not the one to be blamed. Cowley makes the point that Bigger, ââ¬Å"has been trained from the starting signal to be a bad citizen. He had been taught American ideals of lifeââ¬Â¦but had been denied the means of achieving themââ¬Â (Cowley 113). Cowleyââ¬â¢s observation justifies that Bigger reacted as a product of his environment that eternally taught him to be a bad citizen because he had no way to achieve the phase of life he would hope for. This provokes even more tragedy in Biggerââ¬â¢s life. Through the accidental polish off of Mary Dalton, a tragic hero arose in the form of Bigger Thomas. This tragic hero was born out of pure fear for the white man, but as the novel progressed, the fear of oppression slow left the tragic hero as he vows to no longer live in fear.\r\nAfter Bigger Thomasââ¬â¢ accidental murder of Mary Dalton, Biggerââ¬â¢s life turns into a indefensible goose chase where he is forced to hide out unt il being caught by Chicago authorities. While awaiting his trial, certain to breast death, Bigger meets the man that will fight his case. The defendant Max, a white communist decides to take on Bigger Thomasââ¬â¢ case in order to leaven white people the oppressive lifestyles black people were forced to survive on every day. At first Bigger was skeptical about a white man volunteering to defend a black man accused of murder and rape. He questioned, ââ¬Å"Why would Max risk that white tide of hate to help himââ¬Â (Wright 420). He is shocked that a white man would defend a black man out of the goodness of his heart. Max conducts Bigger questions that remind Bigger that he is a clement being among everyone else despite his race. At this point it does not matter to Bigger if Max saves his life, because Max has make him right mentally and undergo change. After intercourse a conversation where Max asked Bigger questions about what he wanted to do with his future, he expresses to Max, ââ¬Å" (you) asked me questions nobody ever asked me before. You knew that I was a murderer two quantify over, but you treated me like a servicemanââ¬Â (Wright 424). After Max assures Bigger that he is a human, Bigger transforms his way of looking at life. Instead of feeling unvaryingly oppressed, Bigger believes that he is a human that deserves a future practically like everyone else despite the color of his skin. Instead of accepting his death sentence, Bigger realizes that he has the urge to live his life as a human that possesses the ability to obtain a future. As Max reassures him, ââ¬Å"youââ¬â¢re human, Biggerââ¬Â (Wright 424) Bigger comes to a change in his heart. He realizes that the fear he has sustained from the white people that constantly suppress him comes from his own thoughts. He direct believes in himself as an individual that no longer lives in fear. Because of this, Bigger is able to accept his death sentence and change his outlook on life . Unfortunately, this change came too late in his existence to matter. Although Bigger loses the mesh with life, he ultimately wins the battle with the color of his skin after accepting that he is just as human as Max, his defendant.\r\nIn James Baldwinââ¬â¢s article, ââ¬Å"Many k Gone- Twentieth degree centigrade Interpretations of Native Son,ââ¬Â Baldwin explains his interpretation of Bigger Thomasââ¬â¢ battle within Native son. He explains, ââ¬Å"In this case the force of event is not poverty merely, but color a circumstance which cannot be overcome, against which the protagonist battles for his life and losesââ¬Â (Baldwin 53). This statement is not perfect considering a battle is not lost. horizontal though Bigger Thomas is sentenced to death, he is able to end his life with serenity of mind knowing that he can die as a human without fear. The change Bigger Thomas has undergone shows that Bigger has overcome his oppression thus amiable his battle. After rea ding Native Son, the protagonist Bigger Thomas resembled another tragic hero from the play, Death of a Salesman. By comparing Willy Loman, the protagonist of Death of a Salesman to Bigger Thomas, one can tell how similar their characters are although they have been created in different time periods and environments. Both Bigger and Willy are lost souls trying to cash in ones chips meaning to their ultimately meaningless lives. As a result of their self do pressure to have a mapping in life, they both are not well liked by their friends. After divulging a plan to rob a store owned by a white person, Bigger gives his friends Gus, G.H., and Jack unrelenting instructions to meet together at a specific time. When Gus shows up to their meet spot late, Bigger is outraged. He cusses at his friends and resorts to physical harm due to his anger. While his friends watch Bigger self-destruct into a man of rage, G.H. lets bigger know that, ââ¬Å"You make muck up things nowââ¬Â (Wright 40). Not only if had Bigger spoiled the plan to rob the store, but Bigger had also spoiled his friendships as all three men leave him to wallow in his rage alone. A similar situation occurs in Death of a Salesman as Willy Loman receives a friendly visit with his friend Charley. Since both men were unable to sleep, they decided that a quick game of cards would be a sufficient outlet for their energy. While playing cards, Willy develops a hostile posture towards Charley and constantly insults him on his choice of eating habits and card playing abilities. After Charley accuses Willy of swindle during their game, Willy evolves into a rage-infested tyrant and orders his friend to leave. Charley retorts, ââ¬Å"You ought to be ashamed of yourselfââ¬Â (Miller 1252) and storms out the door. This instance compares to Bigger Thomasââ¬â¢ uproar with his friends considering both outbursts led to their friends leaving them to wallow in their own anger.\r\nIn addition to not being well liked, both Willy Loman and Bigger Thomas live in constant fear throughout their stories. As a honest salesman, Willy Loman spends his days fearing that he is not triple-crown enough to provide for his family. Because of this looming fear to be successful, Willy often lies to his family about his job in sales to make himself seem far-off superior to who he really is. For example, bandage Willy explains to his wife, Linda about the money he has made on one of his sales trips, he exaggerates the amount of money he made. This lie would have been unnoticed if Linda did not ask Willy to pay for the reparations of their leaky roof. When Linda asks him to pay, Willy exclaims, ââ¬Å"A ampere-second and twenty dollars! My god, if business donââ¬â¢t pick up I donââ¬â¢t know what Iââ¬â¢m gonna doââ¬Â (Miller 1247). The shame Willy feels because he is unable to pay for the roof reparations directly correlates to the constant fear Willy has to become successful for his family. Bigger Thomas is also a character that constantly lives in fear. This fear is shown when Bigger is explaining to his lawyer Max about how whites have all the power and Bigger fears that because of this, his life will not amount to anything. He tells Max, ââ¬Å"Well they own everything. They choke you off the face of the earth, they like godââ¬Â¦Ã¢â¬Â (Wright 353). Since Bigger believes that white people control everything he fears that nothing can be through to make his life meaningful. Both Bigger Thomas and Willy Loman possess similar qualities that show are comparable through their lack of ability to make friends throughout their fear ridden lives. Through Bigger Thomasââ¬â¢ life of oppression, violence, and tragedy, one is able to tell that he struggles with the hopes of becoming anything but a ââ¬Å"nobody.ââ¬Â Being the protagonist of a tragic novel, Bigger possesses the qualities of a tragic hero. Even though his life is cut short due to the tragic accidental murd er of Mary Dalton, his bossââ¬â¢ wild daughter, Bigger is able to go through a change that brings him peace of mind as he awaits his sentence to die. Being a product of his environment, Bigger constantly lived in fear of the white man. With the help of his lawyer Max, Bigger was able to undergo change and realize that he too was a human that had no need to live in fear. Drawing from specific scenes from the text, Bigger Thomas can be compared to Willy Loman, the protagonist in the play, Death of a Salesman. Their characters were both inflicted with fear throughout their lives that eventually ended in tragedy for both characters.\r\nWorks Cited\r\nArthur Miller Death of a Salesman. Baym, Nina, gen. ed. I dedicate just now angiotensin converting enzyme chance.\r\nAt least that is how I imagined it would have been resembling if I were in trap in the tribulations of eastbound Berlin nerve-racking to scarper into the desired western hemisphere Berlin between 1961 and 1989. However, it is a gray December day in 2004, and if it werenââ¬â¢t for remains of the Iron mantelpiece and Checkpoint Charlie, people would not be satisfactory to relive that part of history or be reminded of the dictator that destroyed so many lives.\r\nThe temperature was eight degrees Celsius as the bad sky attempted to cough up snow onto Berlin. Before that moment I had only heard of the Berlin Wall with history books and stories. I would sit and harken to travelers tales told by my courageous father who had walked through Checkpoint Charlie and into due east Berlin in seventy-five. He told me how he had to exchange West Berlin money into eastern hemisphere Berlin money at Checkpoint Charlie in the lead enter East Berlin. Then going back ward into West Berlin he had to drop it in a rusty tin can at Check Point Charlie because you were not allowed to extend East Berlin money. He witnessed twain tourists getting assaulted by the guards for trying to import East Berlin money into West Berlin.\r\nMy only expectations of Berlin came from the adventures of my dad. I expected Checkpoint Charlie to be a barricade miles long with tollbooths that have the armor that swing up and wad. Similar to the tollbooths that point across the free paths of truly large cities, or at the airports you go through after short-term parking. Once you pass through the chomping arms of the tollbooths I imagined East Berlin to be scattered with desolate buildings and run down streets. But as I approached the once controlling surround and Checkpoint Charlie I realized nothing was as I imagined it at all.\r\nIt was like walking down any other street in a big city. A a couple of(prenominal) people who were always pushing their way through th e gaps that opened up between the wandering men and women, obviously in to a greater extent of a hurry than anyone else on the street. Christmas lights clung to the tall buildings that ran down the streets of Berlin. People popped in and out of the busy stores, squeezing their die bit of Christmas shopping in beforehand the Holiday.\r\nSuddenly the bustle of people slowed like a murmur in time as I stood right before the Berlin Wall and Checkpoint Charlie which are now ring by the commercial buildings of downtown Berlin. My respect dropped to an engraved brick in the ground that now serves as a commemorative cheek for the Berlin Wall. A chill ran from the tip of my toes all the way to the ends of my hair as I realized how lucky I was to be standing right there in no mans land. I can now speak of the Berlin Wall, not as indirect from a history book, but as a memory.\r\nNo mans land, a muniment now, is where 171 people who attempted to escape into West Berlin were shot, and go away to bleed to death like a deer on the perspective of the road. This area contained walls on either side with mines and stern East Berlin guards to make it approximately impossible to escape. As I stood in the middle of no mans land face up East Berlin, I looked over my left and my right shoulders only to see black, wooden crosses a atomic taller than I am. The crosses looked as if snow had only given them the fun of its company and nothing else around them, when really it was just white sand application the ground. I took a deep breath in as if I was trying to swallow it into my memory, making sure to keep it forever. I am motionless.\r\nWhere the median level of the road would have been, an American spendââ¬â¢s somber picture was enlarged and hoisted up on a gage staring out towards West Berlin. On the opposite side was a Russian Soldier keeping close fancy over East Berlin. Below the soldiersââ¬â¢ pictures was Checkpoint Charlie. wilt flowers surrounded thi s one room tag that once controlled the passage of people from East to West Berlin. Now it also stands as a memorial for people who died crossbreeding over into West Berlin.\r\nOn either side of me, there were remains of the wall still standing. I got an eerie picture as I stared at them. My disposition of time was completely modify. There I stood at one of the most diachronic sites imagining what it would have been like to be encase in by a concrete wall that was suffocating you more and more each day. But when I looked around I was in the middle of one of the largest cities in Germany. It was like time slowed when I was walking through no mans land, but everything else around no mans land and Checkpoint Charlie was full-of-the-moon of life. I was in my own little bubble. I walked about a break and returned to the normal noises and the packed sidewalks of what use to be the Soviet controlled East Berlin. My view of Berlin has been altered for the better, with a greater unde rstanding of the axiom ââ¬Å"seeing is believing.ââ¬Â\r\n'

'Mukherjee vs Rodriguez\r'
'Mukherjee vs. Rodriguez As of today, The United States accepts more sanctivirtuosod immigrants as permanent residents than any other unpolished in the world. The number of immigrants totaled 37. 5 one thousand million as of 2006. All of this has to do with Richard Rodriguez and Bharati Mukherjeeââ¬â¢s stories ground on immigration in the United States. authorise ââ¬Å"Los Otros, Mis Hermanosââ¬Â and ââ¬ÂTwo slipway to Belong in the Statesââ¬Â. Where as Rodriguezââ¬â¢s stage is about a young Mexican immigrant finding it hard to receive in a society where he struggles to go steady itââ¬â¢s main nomenclature. He believes as a child that he doesnââ¬â¢t belong in a country where itââ¬â¢s main language is non of his.\r\nHe alone bumps at peace when he is with his family speaking his own language. As fountainhead as where Mukherjeeââ¬â¢s bosh is of 2 sisters named Mira and Bharati, two immigrants and precise successful in their cargoners. Expla ining how Mira all of a sudden has rage towards the country she has lived in for thirty days, due to the lack of effort shown by the U. S. sexual relation to enact a legislation that would non entrust any government benefits towards resident aliens. As for Bharati, she has intricate feelings on the subject at hand. Rodriguez and Mukherjeeââ¬â¢s stories mete out a common theme and purpose, but be diverse in their conflict and focus. Los Otros, Mis Hermanosââ¬Â and ââ¬Å"Two shipway to Belong in the Statesââ¬Â sh be a common theme in where they both are legal immigrants life-time in America. Rodriguezââ¬â¢s story is based on his childhood where he is living as a Mexican immigrant. Since Spanish is the only language he is able to interpret, he acknowledgment ââ¬Å"The language of their Mexican past sounded in differ to the English of public societyââ¬Â (Rodriguez pg. 309). For ââ¬Å"Two Ways to Belong in Americaââ¬Â the two sisters are living in the Unit ed States while Bharati is an American citizen, Mira is not. However both have Indian root within them.\r\nFor both of them their cultural backgrounds are actually unfaltering within them. As of course, them being an immigrant in a new country that they are not familiar with, they both have very strong bounds with their cultural heritage. Where as for example in Mukherjeeââ¬â¢s story she shows how traditional her family is with their Indian marriages by saying how they are properly done in her home country. Mukherjee states ââ¬ÂWe would endure out two years in America, secure our degrees, then return to India to espouse the grooms of our fatherââ¬â¢s choosingââ¬Â (Mukherjee pg. 316).\r\nHowever, they both did not line those guidelines by marrying grooms of their own choosing. In Rodriguezââ¬â¢s story he shows how speaking Spanish do him feel at home, by whenever he spoke to his family members or friends in Spanish he felt as if he was recognized as someone specia l. spell there are similar qualities between the two stories there are contrarieties too. One being their formalities of education, reading where Mukherjeeââ¬â¢s story was coming, from the sisters were well improve and successful in their careers. They both received degrees in their p informalityige subjects.\r\nAs for Rodriguezââ¬â¢s story when he was younger it seemed as if it was very backbreaking for his fosterage into education. For example, his parents training of the English language, as he states ââ¬Å"In public, my father and mother spoke a hesitant, accented, not always grammatical Englishââ¬Â (Rodriguez pg. 309). It seemed as if the knowledge where he was coming from was not as a good deal of a impact as compared to mukherjeeââ¬â¢s learningââ¬â¢s. In ââ¬Å"Los Otros, Mis Hermanosââ¬Â as a young son Rodriguez was very secluded from the rest of civilization by reason of his inability of learning the English language.\r\nIn ââ¬Å"Two Ways to Belo ng in Americaââ¬Â the sisters were very much in content with the rest of the world. They would travel all throughout the world unstrained to try anything new. Where as Rodriguez, he was concealed from his very own neighborhood, he didnââ¬â¢t know the name of his neighbors, as he states, ââ¬Å"But no one in the family knew the names of the old couple who lived close door; until I was seven years old, I did not know the names of the kids who lived across the passagewayââ¬Â (Rodriguez pg. 309).\r\nThe stories by Rodriguez and Mukherjeeââ¬â¢s stories had a similar miscue and dedication, however were disparate in their upbringings and socialization. Being in a country where your not accustomed to is difficult enough, living their must be an even big challenge. In Rodriguezââ¬â¢s case he couldnââ¬â¢t speak Spanish outside of his home so he felt at lost. In Mukherjeeââ¬â¢s situation even after living for 30 years in this country they were still at subject to be dismissed from it. This shows you being the outlander in a world isnââ¬â¢t as easy to sustain, even when they had thought they had finally made it.\r\n'

There are a lot of articles in the newspapers and on the internet to show the seriousness of the equity-breaking of puss stealing. On January 30th 2005, our nationââ¬â¢s lead ing newspapers, namely Berita Minggu and The Star had inform cunt larceny crimes, which had happened near Ipoh, Perak. There are other cases, which cause a more howling(a) result such as death, grievous hurt, shock and so forth. The seriousness of this offense can be seen when Chin Wai Fong died in Brickfields in May when she fought tail against a snatch thief. Then Chong Fee Cheng fell, went into a coma and died while resisting a snatch thief in Johor Baru in mid-June. This was followed by the killing of Rosli Mohamed Saad who had g maven to the aid of an Ind integritysian woman whose bag was snatched in Ampang in June 29. The newspape rs to a fault carried statistics on the number of snatch stealings. Relying on police statistics, Penang Chief Minister burn Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon revealed that in that location had been a total of 515 cases of snatch thefts in Penang between January and May 2004. Meanwhile the Perak Chief Police Officer reported a total of 374 cases of snatch thefts in his state during January to May 2004.\r\nWith all the examples and discussions given, the issue of whether or non the crime of ââ¬Å"snatch theftââ¬Â should be separated from the umbrage of ââ¬Å"theftââ¬Â and ââ¬Å"lootingââ¬Â volition trim a lot of effectual discussion in order to ensure familiar safety. The main and critical issue to be discussed here is that whether the law-breaking of ââ¬Å"theftââ¬Â and ââ¬Å"lootingââ¬Â capablely salute the offence of ââ¬Å"snatch theftââ¬Â. In other manner of speaking, whether or not the factors of the two offences, which are al hit the booksy in the pena l figure are sufficient to be raised for a psyche who localises snatch theft. In order to tackle this issue, the elements of ââ¬Å"theftââ¬Â, which is infra sectionalisation 378 of the penal Code and the elements of ââ¬Å"robberyââ¬Â which is low section 390 of the penal Code have to be analyzed one by one. First and foremost, we would analogous to discuss the elements of ââ¬Å"theftââ¬Â which is under(a)(a) section 378 of the punishable Code. The say provision de tickets theft as ââ¬Å"Whoever, intending to bribe deceitfully any soulal chattel home rally out of the self-discipline of any psyche without that somebodyââ¬â¢s comply, moves that piazza in order to such taking, is tell to commit theftââ¬Â. Basically, from the definition, there are 5 elements of ââ¬Å"theftââ¬Â.\r\nThe first element is dishonesty. It is delimit under section 24 of the penal Code as ââ¬Å"Whoever does any social occasion with the function of causing un conventional gain to one somebody or unconventional vent to another person, irrespective of whether the act causes actual wrongful loss or gain, is utter to do that amour ââ¬Å"dishonestlyââ¬Â.ââ¬Â This shows that the heavy occasion is to consider whether or not there is an intention to cause wrongful gain or wrongful loss to the other person. What is ââ¬Å"wrongful gainââ¬Â and ââ¬Å"wrongful lossââ¬Â then? It is tho defined in section 23 of the penal Code, whereby a person is said to gain wrongfully when such person retains wrongfully, as wellspring as when such person acquires wrongfully. A person is said to lose wrongfully when such person is wrongfully kept out of any seat, as well as when such person is wrongfully wipe out of the billet. Since dishonesty requires the intention to wrongfully gain or lose, the intention moldiness exist at the age of moving of the post. This is because, it is not theft if there is no intention at the time of taki ng of the situation .\r\nThe authority for the first element can be seen in the case of rajah Mohamed v. R whereby the teaching is that there must(prenominal)(prenominal) be an intention to mete out dishonestly any movable station out of the will power of another person without that personââ¬â¢s consent in order to constitute theft. gist to say, it is sufficient that the person, who has such dishonest intention moves the property in order to such taking. In addition, it is not demand to move such property in order to move out of the self- obstinance of the other person.\r\nNext, the second element is that the person must take without consent. It representation that there must be an intention to take anotherââ¬â¢s property without consent. The important point here is how the accuse conceives of the situation whether or not the person whose property is taken would consent to it. In other words, this element depends on the drumhead of the owner of the property. In th e situation when a person consents, then the actus reus of theft is not fulfilled and thus there is no theft.\r\nThe third element is to take out of possession. It means that the property must be taken or moved out of the possession. If the criminate has a dishonest intention and moves the property, then he is said to move the property out of possession. It is to be noted here that theft is an offence against possession and not of ownership. Therefore, the offence is against the person who is in possession. A possession for the inclination of theft relates to movable property and movable property, which is lost or abandoned whitethorn not be in any possession of any person. However, when it is neither lost nor abandoned, even if it is then placed in the possession of whateverone else, the possession may still remain with the true owner.\r\nSubsequently, the 4th element is movable property. What is ââ¬Å"movable propertyââ¬Â is defined under section 22 of the Penal Code, w hich states that the words ââ¬Å"movable propertyââ¬Â are intended to complicate corporeal property of every description. Except get down and things devoted to the earth, or permanently fastened to anything which is attached to the earth. It means that as long as the thing is attached to the earth, therefore it is not movable.\r\nFurthermore, a thing attached to the earth is not movable and cannot be a subject of theft until it has been severed from the earth. place down within the meaning of section 22 of the Penal Code does not include soil from the land. However, when it is cut into out of the land, it is then known as movable property. In the case of Lim Soon Gong & Ors., the respondents were charged with committing theft of sand from the foreshore. The principle of this case regarding the fourth element is that sand, which has been dug out from the foreshore is a movable property. Eventually, the final element of theft is there must be a moving of the property. It means that the property must be moved out of possession. This can be seen in the authority of Raja Mohamed v. R, the accused had removed boxes containing two dozens of glasses from the companyââ¬â¢s ground floor storeroom. He was charged of convicting theft. The principle of this case is that it is sufficient if the person had formed a dishonest intention and moves the property in order to such taking. Moreover, it is not necessary to move the property fully out of possession in order to commit theft.\r\nHaving fulfilled all the five elements under section 378 of the Penal Code, the accused then can be held apt(predicate) for committing theft. office 379 of the Penal Code further provides the penalisation for theft, whereby one can be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to heptad age or with fine or both. It further adds that for a second or subsequent offence, one shall be punished with imprisonment and also be apt(predicate) to fine or whipping. The qu estion to be asked is whether the offence of ââ¬Å"snatch theftââ¬Â can fall under the offence of ââ¬Å"theftââ¬Â under section 378 of the Penal Code. It seems like it is insufficient as when snatch theft is connected, there will be the element of speciality on the person who is creation snatched, whereas the elements of theft are more mild in the sense that there is nothing in the provision states that there is a use of obligate or further may result to a more critical situation such as death. Thus, this will make the penalization for theft does not suit the offence of snatch theft. Snatch theft as existence said earlier can cause injury to the other person and it can even come to the period of causing death to the other person. Besides that, there also should be an element of crush. These elements seem do not present in the elements of theft. Thus, we submit that the offence of ââ¬Å"theftââ¬Â does not sufficiently address the offence snatch theft as snatch the ft is more serious and causes more severe injury as compared to theft.\r\nHaving discussed the elements of ââ¬Å"theftââ¬Â, we will go into dilate the offence of ââ¬Å"robberyââ¬Â in order to come to the conclusion of whether or not it is sufficiently address the offence of snatch theft. air division 390 of the Penal Code which is regarding the offence of ââ¬Å"robberyââ¬Â will be analyzed. clause (1) of the said provision states that in all robbery there is either theft or extortion. In other words, for the offence of robbery to arise, either the two main elements, which are theft or extortion has to exist.\r\n fraction 390(2) states that theft is ââ¬Å"robberyââ¬Â if, in order to commit theft, or in committing the theft, or in training out or attempting to carry away property obtained by the theft, the offender, for that end, voluntarily causes or attempts to cause to any person death, or hurt, or wrongful simpleness, or awe of moment death, or of sec hur t, or of instant wrongful restraint. Section 390(3) defines extortion as robbery, if the offender, at the time of committing the extortion, is in the presence of the person put in fear and commits the extortion by putting that person in fear of instant death, of instant hurt, or of instant wrongful restraint to that person or to some other person, and, by so putting in fear, induces the person so put in fear then and there to deliver up the thing extorted.\r\nIn other words, robbery is theft or extortion in an alter form. then, the elements of theft or extortion must be present in addition to the aggravated circumstances set out in robbery. Section 390 provides for the circumstances when theft constitutes robbery. The words ââ¬Å"for that endââ¬Â in section 390 must relate to the commission of theft. Hence where an assault has no relation to the theft, robbery is not committed. If, for example, the accused first assaulted the complainant and then by and by formed an intention to take his watch, he cannot be liable for robbery but only for theft.\r\nThe crucial point under the offence of robbery is to determine the meaning of the word ââ¬Å"for that endââ¬Â. The force or threat of force must be for the purpose of committing theft and carrying away the property. In Karuppa Gounden, it was held that ââ¬Å"the word ââ¬Ëfor that endââ¬â¢ in section 390, Penal Code, cannot be read as meaning in those circumstancesââ¬Â. It was held by the Lahore Court in Karmun that, ââ¬Å"ââ¬Â¦before a person can be convicted of robbery the prosecution must prove that hurt was caused in order to the committing of the theft or in committing the theft or in carrying away or attempting to carry away the property obtained by the theft. The hurt contemplated must be a conscious and voluntary act on the reference of the thief for the purpose of overpowering resistance on the part of the victim, quite separate and distinct from the act of theft itselfââ¬Â¦Ã¢â¬Â \r\nIn the other case of Bishambhar Nath v. emperor AIR, the principle is that in order to commit theft of the capital or in committing the theft of cash for carrying away or attempting to carry away property obtained by the theft, the accused for the theft voluntarily caused or attempted to cause hurt.\r\nThe word ââ¬Å"for that endââ¬Â all the way means that the hurt caused by the offender must be with the express object of facilitating the commission of theft or hurt must be caused while the offender was committing theft or in carrying away or in attempting to carry away the property obtained by the theft. It does not mean that the assault or hurt must be caused in the equal transaction or in the same circumstances. In Nga Po Thet, the essence of robbery is that the offender must cause death, hurt or wrongful restraint or fear of death, hurt or wrongful restraint in the commission of theft or in carrying away the property obtained by theft. The punishment for robbery is s tated in section 392 of the Penal Code, whereby it shall be punished for a term which may extend to ten years and shall be liable to fine. In addition, if the robbery is committed between sundown and sunrise, the imprisonment may be extended to fourteen years and shall also be liable to fine or whipping.\r\nFrom the discussion of robbery as in section 390 of the Penal Code, the offence of robbery seems to sate some elements of snatch theft. As what has been said earlier, the offence of snatch theft involves the elements of force and the consequences of the act will lead to a severe injury to the victim and sometimes it may lead to death of the victim. In fact, section 390 is being used for the time being as to replace the offence of snatch theft which is not in the Penal Code yet. This shows that snatch theft is very dangerous to the public at large as the offence is n primal equivalent to the elements of the offence of robbery under section 390. The punishment for snatch theft i s as the same as the punishment for robbery under section 392. This again proves that snatch theft is a serious crime.\r\nHowever, we strongly think that there must be an element of force in snatch theft. This is because when a person snatches another personââ¬â¢s handbag, there is an creative activity of force used against the other person. This is because, when a person wants to grab the other personââ¬â¢s bag, it will happen fast. When this happens, the other person will be hurt and injured as there is force used against him or her. In other words, force and hurt will tend to exist at the same time when a person commits the offence of snatch theft.\r\nIn the current situation, the Deputy Internal credential personal matters Minister Datuk Noh Omar has clarified in Parliament that the Police, since early 2004, had resorted to using the Emergency Ordinance (Crime Prevention & Public Safety) 1969 against snatch thieves ââ¬Å"if the Police is convinced that the suspec ts had committed the offenceââ¬Â. Under the Ordinance, those suspected may be held for sixty days after which the Internal Security Minister could decide to detain them for up to two years without trial. The Deputy Internal Security personal matters Minister further clarified that the Police would also charge snatch thieves under sections 392, 394 and 397 of the Penal Code, which allows for caning, fall back terms (up to twenty years if armed, under section 394), apart from imposing fines. This last step is in line with the suggestions of another politician, Karpal Singh, who called for amendments to sections 392 and 394 of the Penal Code to impose mandatory whipping of not less than six strokes. It was also the suggestion of Wong Sulong in his Editorial in The Star on June 15th, 2004.\r\nSince there is still no laws imposed on snatch theft, it is to be tabled in the year 2005. The Minister in the Prime Ministerââ¬â¢s Department, Datuk Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad said a shoot d ealing specifically with snatch theft offences would be tabled in Parliament in July, 2005. He added that, under the new law, the offenders could be imprisoned between septenary and twenty years and whipping could be include as part of the punishment. Currently in the Penal Code, there is no special provision for snatch theft besides the separate charges for theft and robbery, which carry a maximum jail sentence of seven and twenty years respectively. He further added that the law would be effective by the end of the year 2005 if everything goes smoothly. The need of having a special law for snatch theft is due to the many reported cases of victims being killed or seriously injured. This shows that the offence of snatch theft is indeed a serious crime.\r\n'

This is unethical because the patients were being lied to about something that ultimately affected their health and lives. Id asked him to walk with me, flirting fecklessly hardly successfully, in order to pump him for information.\r\nHe was nodding, anxious for more.\r\nMy voice was nearly soundless. ââ¬Å"You told me scary stories?? Quileute legends.ââ¬Â\r\nHe terminationd his eyes and opened them again. ââ¬Å"Yes.ââ¬Â The word was tense, fervent, like he was on the edge of something vital. He spoke slowly, making each word distinct. ââ¬Å"Do you remember what I said?ââ¬Â\r\nEven in the dark, he must be able to see the smorgasbord in the color of my face . How could I ever give that? Without realizing what he was doing, Jacob had told me exactly what I needed to know that day??that Edward was a vampire.\r\nHe looked at me with eyes that knew too much. ââ¬Å"Think hard,ââ¬Â he told me.\r\nââ¬Å"Yes, I remember,ââ¬Â I breathed.\r\nHe inhaled deeply, struggling. ââ¬Å"Do you remember all the stor??ââ¬Â He couldnt finish the question. His mouth popped open like something had stuck in his throat.\r\nââ¬Å" wholly the stories?ââ¬Â I asked.\r\nHe nodded mutely.\r\nMy head churned. just now one story very mattered. I knew hed begun with others, moreover I couldnt remember the inconsequential prelude, especially not while my brain was so clouded with exhaustion. I started to shake my head.\r\nJacob groaned and jumped off the bed. He pressed his fists against his forehead and breathed fast and angry. ââ¬Å"You know this, you know this,ââ¬Â he muttered to himself.\r\nââ¬Å"Jake? Jake, please, Im exhausted. Im no good a t this right now. by chance in the morning??ââ¬Â\r\nHe took a steady breath and nodded. ââ¬Å"Maybe it will come back to you. I guess I understand wherefore you however remember the one story,ââ¬Â he added in a sarcastic, bitter tone. He plunked back onto the mattress beside me. ââ¬Å"Do you mind if I ask you a question about that?ââ¬Â he asked, still sarcastic. ââ¬Å"Ive been dying ro know.ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"A question about what?ââ¬Â I asked warily.\r\nââ¬Å"About the vampire story I told you.ââ¬Â\r\nI stared at him with guarded eyes, unable to answer. He asked his question anyway.\r\nââ¬Å"Did you echtly not know?ââ¬Â he asked me, his voice turning husky. ââ¬Å"Was I the one who told you what he was?ââ¬Â\r\nHow did he know this? Why did he decide to believe, why now? My odontiasis clenched together. I stared back at him, no intention of speaking. He could see that.\r\nââ¬Å"See what I mean about loyalty?ââ¬Â he murmured, even huskier now. â⬠ Å"Its the same for me, only worse. You cant imagine how tight Im bound??ââ¬Â\r\nI didnt like that??didnt like the way his eyes closed as if he were in pain when he spoke of being bound. More than shun??I realized I detest it, hated anything that caused him pain. Hated it fiercely.\r\nSams face filled my mind.\r\nFor me, this was all fundamentally voluntary. I protected the Cullens secret out of love; unrequited, but true. For Jacob, it didnt seem to be that way.\r\nââ¬Å"Isnt there any way for you to get free?ââ¬Â I whispered, sorrowful the rough edge at the back of his shorn tomentum cerebri.\r\nHis hands began to tremble, but he didnt open his eyes. ââ¬Å"No. Im in this for behavior. A life sentence.ââ¬Â A bare laugh. ââ¬Å"Longer, maybe.ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"No, Jake,ââ¬Â I moaned. ââ¬Å"What if we ran away? and you and me. What if we left home, and left Sam behind?ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Its not something I can hunt down away from, Bella,ââ¬Â he whispered. â⬠ Å"I would run with you, though, if I could.ââ¬Â His shoulders were shaking now, too. He took a deep breath. ââ¬Å"Look, Ive got to leave.ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Why?ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"For one thing, you look like youre going to pass out at any second. You need your sleep??I need you firing on all pistons. Youre going to phase this out, you have to.ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"And why else?ââ¬Â\r\nHe frowned. ââ¬Å"I had to sneak out??Im not suppositious to see you. Theyve got to be wondering where I am.ââ¬Â His mouth twisted. ââ¬Å"I suppose I should go let them know.ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"You dont have to tell them anything,ââ¬Â I hissed.\r\nââ¬Å"All the same, I will.ââ¬Â\r\nThe anger flashed hot inside me. ââ¬Å"I hate them!ââ¬Â\r\nJacob looked at me with wide eyes, surprised. ââ¬Å"No, Bella. Dont hate the guys. Its not Sams or any of the others faults. I told you before??its me. Sam is actually?? well, incredibly cool. Jared and Paul are great, too, though Paul is kind of?? And Embrys always been my friend. Nothings changed there??the only thing that hasnt changed. I feel really bad abour the things I used to commend about Sam??ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Sam was incredibly cool.ââ¬Â I glared at him in disbelief, but let it go.\r\nââ¬Å"Then why arent you supposed to see me?ââ¬Â I demanded.\r\nââ¬Å"Its not safe,ââ¬Â he mumbled feeling down.\r\nHis words sent a thrill of alarm through me.\r\nDid he know that, too? nada knew that besides me. But he was right??it was the middle of the night, the perfect time for hunting. Jacob shouldnt be here in my room. If someone came for me, I had ðŸË® be alone.\r\nââ¬Å"If I thought it was too?? too risky,ââ¬Â he whispered, ââ¬Å"I wouldnt have come. But Bella,ââ¬Â he looked at me again, ââ¬Å"I made you a promise. I had no idea it would be so hard to keep, but that doesnt mean Im not going to try.ââ¬Â\r\nHe saw the incomprehension in my face. ââ¬Å" later that stupid mental picture,ââ¬Â he reminded me. ââ¬Å"I promised you that I wouldnt ever hurt you?? So I really blew it this afternoon, didnt I?ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"I know you didnt want to do it, Jake. Its okay.ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Thanks, Bella.ââ¬Â He took my hand. ââ¬Å"Im going to do what I can to be here for you, just like I promised.ââ¬Â He grinned at me suddenly. The grin was not mine, nor Sams, but some strange combination of the two. ââ¬Å"It would really help if you could figure this out on your own, Bella. Put some honest effort into it.ââ¬Â\r\nI made a flimsy grimace. ââ¬Å"Ill try.ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"And Ill try to see you briefly.ââ¬Â He sighed. ââ¬Å"And theyll try to talk me out of that.ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Dont listen to them.ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Ill try.ââ¬Â He shook his head, as if he doubted his success. ââ¬Å"Come and tell me as currently as you figure it out.ââ¬Â Something occurred to him just then, something that made his hands shake. ââ¬Å"If you?? if you want to.ââ¬Â\r\nÃ¢â ¬Å"Why wouldnt I want to see you?ââ¬Â\r\nHis face saturnine hard and bitter, one speed of light percent the face that belonged to Sam. ââ¬Å"Oh, I can think of a reason,ââ¬Â he said in a harsh tone. ââ¬Å"Look, I really have to go. Could you do something for me?ââ¬Â\r\nI just nodded, frightened of the change in him.\r\nââ¬Å"At least call me??if you dont want to see me again. Let me know if its like that.ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"That wont happen??ââ¬Â\r\nHe raised one hand, cutting me off. ââ¬Å"Just let me know.ââ¬Â\r\nHe stood and headed for the window.\r\nââ¬Å"Dont be an idiot, Jake,ââ¬Â I complained. ââ¬Å"Youll break your leg. handling the door. Charlies not going to catch you.ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"I wont get hurt,ââ¬Â he muttered, but he turned for the door. He hesitated as he passed me, staring at me with an expression like something was stabbing him. He held one hand out, pleading.\r\nI took his hand, and suddenly he yanked me??too about??right off the bed so that I thudded against his chest.\r\nââ¬Å"Just in case,ââ¬Â he muttered against my hair, crushing me in a bear hug that about broke my ribs.\r\nââ¬Å"Cant??breathe!ââ¬Â I gasped.\r\nHe dropped me at once, keeping one hand at my waist so I didnt fall over. He pushed me, more light this time, back down on the bed.\r\nââ¬Å"Get some sleep, Bells. Youve got to get your head working. I know you can do this. I need you. to understand. I wont lose you, Bella. Not for this.ââ¬Â\r\nHe was to the door in one stride, opening it quietly, and then disappearing through it. I listened for him to hit the squeaky step in the stairs, but there was no sound.\r\nI lay back on my bed, my head revolve. I was too confused, too worn out. I closed my eyes, trying to make sense of it, only to be swallowed up by unconsciousness so swiftly that it was disorienting.\r\nIt was not the peaceful, creamless sleep Id yearned for??of course not. I was in the forest again, and I started to wande r the way I always did.\r\nI quickly became aware that this was not the same dream as uncouth. For one thing, I felt no compulsion to wander or to search; I was merely wandering out of habit, because that was what was usually pass judgment of me here. Actually, this wasnt even the same forest. The smell was diametrical, and the light, too. It smelled, not like the damp earth of the woods, but like the douse of the ocean. I couldnt see the sky; still, it seemed like the cheer must be shining??the leaves above were nacreous jade green.\r\nThis was the forest around La Push??near the beach there, I was sure of it. I knew that if I found the beach, I would be able to see the sun, so I hurried forward, side by side(p) the faint sound of waves in the distance.\r\nAnd then Jacob was there. He grabbed my hand, pulling me back toward the blackest part of the forest.\r\nââ¬Å"Jacob, whats wrong?ââ¬Â I asked. His face was the frightened face of a boy, and his hair was beautiful agai n, swept back into a ponytail on the nape of his neck. He yanked with all his strength, but I resisted; I didnt want to go into the dark.\r\nââ¬Å"Run, Bella, you have to run!ââ¬Â he whispered, terrified.\r\nThe abrupt wave of deja vu was so immobile it nearly woke me up.\r\nI knew why I know this place now. It was because Id been here before, in another dream. A million years agone, part of a dissimilar life entirely. This was the dream Id had the night after Id walked with Jacob on the beach, the first night I knew that Edward was a vampire. reliving that day with Jacob must have dredged this dream out of my buried memories.\r\nDetached from the dream now, I waited for it to frivol out. A light was coming toward me from the beach. In just a moment, Edward would walk through the trees, his skin faintly glowing and his eyes black and dangerous. He would flap to me, and smile. He would be beautiful as an angel, and his teeth would be pointed and sharp??\r\nBut I was acquiri ng ahead of myself. Something else had to happen first.\r\nJacob dropped my hand and yelped. Shaking and twitching, he fell to the ground at my feet.\r\nââ¬Å"Jacob!ââ¬Â I screamed, but he was gone.\r\nIn his place was an enormous, red-brown wildcat with dark, legal eyes.\r\nThe dream veered off course, like a correspond jumping the tracks.\r\nThis was not the same animate being that Id ideate of in another life. This was the great russet wolf Id stood half a foot from in the meadow, just a week ago. This wolf was huge, monstrous, oversizedger than a bear.\r\nThis wolf stared intently at me, trying to stockpile something vital with his intelligent eyes. The black-brown, familiar eyes of Jacob Black.\r\nI woke screaming at the top of my lungs.\r\nI almost expected Charlie to come check on me this time. This wasnt my usual screaming. I buried my head in my rest and tried to muffle the hysterics that my screams were building into. J pressed the cotton tight against my face , wondering if I couldnt also somehow smother the connection Id just made.\r\nBut Charlie didnt come in. and eventually I was able to gag the strange screeching coming out of my throat.\r\nI remembered it all now??every word that Jacob had said to me that day on the beach, even the part before he got to the vampires, the ââ¬Å" iciness ones.ââ¬Â Especially that first part.\r\nââ¬Å"Do you know any of our old stories, about where we came from??the Quileutes, I mean?ââ¬Â he asked.\r\nââ¬Å"Not really,ââ¬Â I admitted.\r\nââ¬Å"Well, there are lots of legends, some of them claiming to date back to the Flood??supposedly, the ancient Quileutes tied their canoes to the tops of the tallest trees on the mountain to survive, like Noah and the ark.ââ¬Â He smiled then, to show me how little stock he put in the histories. ââ¬Å" other legend claims that we descended from wolves??and that the wolves are our brothers still. Its against tribal law to kill them.\r\nââ¬Å"Then ther e are the stories about the cold ones.ââ¬Â His voice dropped a little lower.\r\nââ¬Å"The cold ones?ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Yes. thither are stories of the cold ones as old as the wolf legends, and some much more recent. agree to legend, my own great-grandfather knew some of them. He was the one who made the treaty that kept them off our land.ââ¬Â Jacob rolled his eyes.\r\nââ¬Â Your great-grandfather?ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"He was a tribal elder, like my father. You see, the cold ones are the natural enemies of the wolf?? well, not the wolf really, but the wolves that turn into men, like our ancestors. You would call them werewolves.ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Werewolves have enemies?ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å" tho one.ââ¬Â\r\nThere was something stuck in my throat, choking me. I tried to swallow it down, but it was lodged there, un-moving. I tried to eruct it out.\r\nââ¬Å"Werewolf,ââ¬Â I gasped.\r\nYes, that was the word that I was choking on.\r\nThe all world lurched, tilting the wrong way on its axis.\r\nWhat kind of a place was this? Could a world really exist where ancient legends went wandering around the borders of tiny, peanut towns, facing down mythical monsters? Did this mean every impossible fairy tale was grounded somewhere in absolute truth? Was there anything sane or normal at all, or was everything just delusion and ghost stories?\r\nI clutched my head in my hands, trying to keep it from exploding.\r\nA small, dry voice in the back of my mind asked me what the big deal was. Hadnt I already accepted the existence of vampires long ago??and without all the hysterics that time?\r\nExactly, I wanted to scream back at the voice. Wasnt one myth enough for anyone, enough for a lifetime?\r\nBesides, thered never been one moment that I wasnt completely aware that Edward Cullen was above and beyond the ordinary. It wasnt such a surprise to see out what he was??because he so ostensibly was something.\r\nBut Jacob? Jacob, who was just Jacob, and nothing more than t hat? Jacob, my friend? Jacob, the only human Id ever been able to touch on to??\r\nAnd he wasnt even human.\r\nI fought the urge to scream again.\r\nWhat did this say about me?\r\nI knew the answer to that one. It said that there was something deeply wrong with me. Why else would my life be filled with characters from horror movies? Why else would I care so much about them that it would tear big chunks right out of my chest when they went off along their mythical ways?\r\nIn my head, everything spun and shifted, rearranging so that things that had meant one thing before, now meant something else.\r\nThere was no cult. There had never been a cult, never been a gang. No, it was much worse than that. It was a inner circle.\r\nA pack of five mind-blowingly gigantic, multihued werewolves that had stalked right past me in Edwards meadow??\r\nSuddenly, I was in a frenetic hurry. I glanced at the clock??it was way too early and I didnt care. I had to go to La Push now. I had to see Jacob so he could tell me that I hadnt lost my mind altogether.\r\nI pulled on the first clean clothes I could find, not bothering to be sure they matched, and took the stairs two at a time. I almost ran into Charlie as I skidded into the hallway, headed for the door.\r\nââ¬Å"Where are you going?ââ¬Â he asked, as surprised to see me as I was to see him. ââ¬Å"Do you know what time it is?ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Yeah. I have to go see Jacob.ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"I thought the thing with Sam??ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"That doesnt matter, I have to talk to him right now.ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Its pretty early.ââ¬Â He frowned when my expression didnt change. ââ¬Å"Dont you want breakfast?ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Not hungry.ââ¬Â The words flew through my lips. He was jam my path to the exit. I considered ducking around him and making a run for it, but I knew I would have to explain that to him later. ââ¬Å"Ill be back soon, okay?ââ¬Â\r\nCharlie frowned. ââ¬Å"Straight to Jacobs house, right? No busts on the way?ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Of course not, where would I stop?ââ¬Â My words were running together in my hurry.\r\nââ¬Å"I dont know,ââ¬Â he admitted. ââ¬Å"Its just?? well, theres been another attack??the wolves again. It was real close to the resort by the hot springs??theres a viewer this time. The victim was only a dozen yards from the alley when he disappeared. His wife saw a huge gray wolf just a few minutes later, while she was searching for him, and ran for help.ââ¬Â\r\nMy stomach dropped like Id hit a corkscrew on a roller coaster. ââ¬Å"A wolf attacked him?ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Theres no concentrate of him??just a little blood again.ââ¬Â Charlies face was pained. ââ¬Å"The rangers are going out fortify, taking armed volunteers. Therere a lot of hunters who are eager to be involved??theres a reward being offered for wolf carcasses. Thats going to mean a lot of firepower out there in the forest, and it worries me.ââ¬Â He shook his head. ââ¬Å"When heap get too excited, accidents happen??ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Theyre going to engage the wolves?ââ¬Â My voice shot through three octaves.\r\nââ¬Å"What else can we do? Whats wrong?ââ¬Â he asked, his tense eyes studying my face. I felt faint; I must be whiter than usual. ââ¬Å"You arent turning into a tree-hugger on me, are you?ââ¬Â\r\nI couldnt answer. If he hadnt been watching me, I would have put my head between my knees. Id forgotten about the missing hikers, the bloody paw prints?? I hadnt connected those facts to my first realization.\r\nââ¬Å"Look, honey, dont let this scare you. Just stay in town or on the highway??no stops??okay?ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Okay,ââ¬Â I repeated in a weak voice.\r\nââ¬Å"Ive got to go.ââ¬Â\r\nI looked at him closely for the first time, and saw that he had his gun strapped to his waist and hiking boots on.\r\nââ¬Å"You arent going out there after the wolves, are you, Dad?ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Ive got to help, Bells. People are disappearing.ââ¬Â\r \nMy voice shot up again, almost neurotic now. ââ¬Å"No! No, dont go. Its too dangerous!ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Ive got to do my job, kid. Dont be such a pessimist??Ill be fine.ââ¬Â He turned for the door, and held it open. ââ¬Å"You leaving?ââ¬Â\r\nI hesitated, my stomach still spinning in uncomfortable loops. What could I say to stop him? I was too dizzy to think of a solution.\r\nââ¬Å"Bells?ââ¬Â\r\nââ¬Å"Maybe its too early to go to La Push,ââ¬Â I whispered.\r\nââ¬Å"I agree,ââ¬Â he said, and he stepped out into the rain, shutting the door behind him.\r\nAs soon as he was out of sight, I dropped to the floor and put my head between my knees.\r\nShould I go after Charlie? What would I say?\r\nAnd what about Jacob? Jacob was my scoop friend; I needed to monish him. If he really was a??I cringed and forced myself to think the word??werewolf (and I knew it was true, I could feel it), then people would be shooting at him! I needed to tell him and his friends that peop le would try to kill them if they went running around like gigantic wolves. I needed to tell them to stop.\r\nThey had to stop! Charlie was out there in the woods. Would they care about that? I wondered?? Up until now, only strangers had disappeared. Did that mean anything, or was it just chance?\r\nI needed to believe that Jacob, at least, would care about that.\r\nEither way, I had to censure him.\r\nOr?? did I?\r\nJacob was my best friend, but was he a monster, too? A real one? A bad one? Should I warn him, if he and his friends were?? were murderers! If they were out slaughtering innocent hikers in cold blood? If they were truly creatures from a horror movie in every sense, would it be wrong to protect them?\r\nIt was inevitable that I would have to compare Jacob and his friends to the Cullens. I wrapped my arms around my chest, fighting the hole, while I thought of them.\r\nI didnt know anything about werewolves, clearly. I would have expected something closer to the movies??b ig hairy half-men creatures or something??if Id expected anything at all. So I didnt know what made them hunt, whether hunger or thirst or just a propensity to kill. It was hard to judge, not knowing that.\r\nBut it couldnt be worse than what the Cullens endured in their quest to be good. I thought of Esme??the tears started when I pictured her kind, lovely face??and how, as motherly and loving as she was, shed\r\nhad to hold her nose, all ashamed, and run from me when I was bleeding. It couldnt be harder than that. I thought of Carlisle, the centuries upon centuries that he had struggled to teach himself to ignore blood, so that he could save lives as a doctor. Nothing could be harder than that.\r\nThe werewolves had chosen a different path.\r\nNow, what should I choose?\r\n'
