Sino-Soviet Relations, 1958-1962 --- The Second Taiwan Strait Crisis Essay - 2
Sino-Soviet Relations, 1958-1962 --- The Second Taiwan Strait Crisis and the Sino-Soviet Split - Essay Example From all outward appearances, the 1950 Sino-Soviet alliance was impenetrable and that the two countries were engaged in a common goal to ensure that Communism was a major influence around the world. There was more than enough evidence to support this perception. Under Mao Tse-tungââ¬â¢s leadership, China formally aligned itself with the USSR. When the Communists in North Korea invaded the Republic of Korea, China intervened and the USSR lent military aid.1 What was perceived as an ideal and threatening partnership would not stand the test of ideological differences. This paper seeks to provide an understanding of how this seemingly ideal partnership was doomed for failure. The events leading up to, during and immediately after the second Taiwan crisis of 1958 are significant in their manifestation of just how far apart the Soviet Union and China were growing. By the 1960s, the Sino-Soviet Alliance was practically shattered as their respective ideologies and polices were increasingly at odds. The office of the US Central Intelligence Agency reported to the USââ¬â¢s administrators in February 1962 that: Sino-Soviet relations are in a critical phase just short of an acknowledged and definitive split. There is no longer much of a fundamental resolution of differences. In our view, the chances that such a split can be avoided in 1962 are no better than ever.2 There are a number of theories put forth by historians and political scientists attempting to understand the driving force splitting the union between the worldââ¬â¢s two largest Communist states. Athwal argues that the USââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"nuclear superiorityâ⬠put increasing pressures on Sino-Soviet relations and policies by first influencing China to obtain nuclear weapons and by forcing the Soviets to look to the West in a more amicable way. Moreover, both China and the Soviet Union had

Iran Domestic Politics and Nuclear Choices
Iran Domestic Politics and Nuclear Choices Iranââ¬â¢s Military and Nuclear Capabilities Worldwide enthusiasm for Iran was elevated significantly in the late spring of 2002, when the presence of two nuclear destinations was uncovered and understood that Iran had assembled or was building everything expected to deliver enhanced uranium, which could fuel nuclear weapons and in addition nuclear reactors. A pilot uranium plant at Natanz and a business scale enhancement. Starting in March 2003, after disclosures that Iran had hidden nuclear work from the International Atomic Energy Agency, the Agency has been researching Irans nuclear history (AbuZayyad, 2010). Iran was allegedly utilizing fortified materials and burrowing profound underground to store atomic parts with an end goal to secure them in the occasion of an assault. Open reports recommend Iranian offices are presently so profound underground just the biggest dugout buster sort bombs could harm them and the United States is the main nation that has these weapons. Iran likewise constructed a system of passages and redesigned its air safeguards to shield its atomic offices from conceivable assaults (iranwatch.org, 2012). Iran has likewise redesigned its seaward abilities. In November 2012, the Iranian Navy divulged two new submarines and two rocket-propelling warships. Prior, Iranian authorities had said they wanted to plan atomic controlled submarines, which could empower the naval force to keep the subs on watch for more periods and separations. This new ability is seen as a potential risk to the vital adjust in the Persian Gulf and, hence, to the United States and the West. Iran additionally can request its intermediaries in Lebanon, Hezbollah, and associates in Gaza, Hamas, to flame rockets at Israel from the north and south to rebuff Israel. The risk of doing as such is additionally intended to prevent Israel. Israel, in any case, has officially made clear that any assaults from Lebanon would be met with a serious reaction and the Lebanese government is not restless to be dragged into another war by Hezbollah. Correspondingly, Hamas may be hesitant to incite Israel to mount an expansive scale operation in Gaza that would further debilitate its position. In September 2013, Iran and Oman marked a guard collaboration accord; however, that is not prone to have an effect on Irans capacity to assault or protect itself (jewishvirtuallibrary.org, 2015). Politics behind the nuclear Program One of the focal incongruities about Iran is that its dubious atomic project has turned into a characterizing political issue, despite the fact that large portions of the programs points of interest stay covered in mystery. Tehran is open about its journey to get quiet atomic vitality to serve a populace that has multiplied subsequent to the 1979 unrest. Be that as it may the religious government intensely denies any enthusiasm for adding to an atomic weaponââ¬âeven as it brags about its developing capacity to advance uranium, an ability that can be utilized to create power or for a weapons program (iranintelligence.com, 2015). Actually, Iran does not yet need to improve; following Russia is giving the fuel to the new reactor it manufactured in Bushehr. Tehran counters that it has the privilege to improve uranium as a signatory to the NPT. It additionally means to construct extra reactors and says it would like to be subject to remote forces for fuel. At the same time following 2002, global suspicions about Irans long haul plans have developed in light of disclosures by different governments or Iranian outcast gatherings that it has constructed mystery offices that could be utilized for a weapons program. The Islamic Republic has just recognized them afterward. Also, as of mid-2010, Tehran had still not gave full insights about its projects to the International Atomic Energy Agency, as it is likewise needed to do under the NPT (Barzegar, 2014). Iran seems to have needed to begin a mystery program for a few reasons, from its experience amid Iran-Iraq War to the way that five of the worlds nine atomic forces are close-by or on its outskirts. In the meantime, it likewise seems to have embraced a method of atomic supporting or keeping up the choice of a weapons project, while attempting to stay inside the atomic settlement. In any case, the divulgences somewhere around 2002 and 2009 about its mystery offices and the consequent worldwide weight have transformed the project into a major political issue at home. In the effectively strained environment after debated 2009 presidential races, Irans atomic system turned into a political issue that set the hardline administration against both moderates and the Green Movement restriction (Barzegar, 2014). Irans atomic weapons project was a piece of a more extensive endeavor to wind up more independent in arms and innovation in the 1980s. Progressively disconnected, Tehran attempted to gain arms to battle Iraq, which utilized substance weapons and had an atomic weapons program. The eight-year war was the Middle Easts bloodiest advanced clash. Irans atomic project was an outgrowth of this experience (Barzegar, 2014). The project might likewise have been a side effect of the grieved insurgencys inescapable requirement for authenticity and Iranian patriotisms journey for admiration and universal status. Tehran has long looked for access to atomic innovation for the most part as a key to improvement and a method for restoring its previous enormity as an inside of exploratory advancement. The religious government seems to have further dove in its heels because of a recognition that the outside world is attempting to deny innovation and oppressing a nation thatââ¬âdissimilar to Israel, Pakistan and Indiaââ¬âmarked the worldwide settlement on non-expansion. The administration sees the universal groups manages as an assault on an establishing standard of the transformation, to be specific Irans autonomy from outside impact or intercession (Barzegar, 2014). Irans atomic system unfolded in setting of its general governmental issues. Since the 1979 upset, Irans political world class has long been partitioned over how the religious government ought to advance and what worldwide part it ought to seek after. Past expansive ideas, for example, autonomy, independence and social equity, agreement has demonstrated slippery even three decades after the Islamic Republics introduction to the world. The most fundament distinction is whether Iran ought to proceed as a progressive state willing to challenge the world, or whether it ought to settle down and turn into a typical state that plays by universal guidelines. The atomic issue is progressively an impression of this fundamental division. All through the programs initial stages, there had all the earmarks of being a general accord among the political world class about the need or right to continue. In any case, by 2005, the accord had all the earmarks of being disintegrating. Rival groups in Irans political maze started to scrutinize the atomic programs expenses and centrality to Irans improvement objectives. Irans atomic project had turned into a local political football (iranwatch.org, 2012). For general society, the atomic program additionally at first appreciated expansive prevalent backing since it guaranteed vitality autonomy and exploratory advancement. It was likewise prevalent in light of the fact that the administration delineated it as an attestation of Irans rights against remote haughtiness. Anyhow, the system has not been subjected to educated verbal confrontation or open discourse about its definitive objectives, the expenses, and the association with Irans different goals. Agreement closes where specifics start (iranwatch.org, 2012). The three phases of politics talks over nuclear Iran Phase one: Period of consensus1987-2002 The time of greatest accord on Irans atomic project spread over 15 years. The restoration of the shahs atomic system was at first introduced as important to broaden vitality sources. Atomic innovation was compared as front line for advancement and basic for any in regards to toward oneself force. Anyhow, the administration just displayed a method of reasoning for vitality; it did not recognize whatever weapons propositions it had. The system advanced gradually amid this stage, as Iran experienced issues of association and becoming acquainted with innovation that must be procured stealthily abroad. The United States, effectively careful about Irans weapons propositions, tried to square its entrance to any atomic innovation. Humorously, the administration may have gotten a support from cover United States resistance, which stretched out to the development of a light-water reactor at Bushehr that Washington had endorsed when the shah was in force. Irans endeavors to dodge worldwide restriction, which included buys from the Pakistan system run by Khan, were never talked about locally (essayforum.com, 2007). Phase two: Early controversyà 2003-2005 All through this period, the nuclear system was largely a worry of Irans political elites. The Supreme National UN SC in fact went about as the body that mirrored all political propensities. Its choices subsequently professedly mirrored a national accord (iranwatch.org, 2012). The 2002 disclosure about Irans development of an undeclared improvement office at Natanz put Tehran on edge. The exposure agreed with United States worry about the spread of weapons of mass pulverization to maverick administrations and fanatic systems. To abstain from intensifying the issue, the reformist administration of President Mohammad Khatami won understanding in the Supreme National UN SC to meet global concerns midway. Iran consented to apply the NPTs Additional Protocol without confirming it, which allowed stricter universal assessments. It likewise consented to intentionally suspended enhancement for a restricted however unspecified time (essayforum.com, 2007). Irans following arrangements with Britain, France and Germany demonstrated useless and added to shared suspicions. With the United States military engrossed in Iraq, the danger of military activity against Iran subsided. However, hardliners who picked up control of Irans parliament in 2004 started scrutinizing reformists for being too delicate on the United States for trading off Irans hobbies. In 2005, recently chose President Ahmadinejad, upheld by Irans preeminent pioneer, started enhancing uranium once more. The arrangement with the Europeans was shut down (iranwatch.org, 2012). Phase three: Deep divisions2005-2010 Irans nuclear project has to be progressively political amid this stage. Starting 2005, both the official branch and parliament were overwhelmed by hardliners and preservationists. Both Ahmadinejad and Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei utilized the nuclear issue to defame reformists, portraying them as defeatists willing to arrange away Irans hobbies. Their utilization of the nuclear issue as an instrument of fanatic governmental issues finished the stage when the nuclear project should be a national issue. In addition, verbal confrontation was effectively disheartened. Yet the nuclear issue steadily slipped from the hands of the tiptop to the road. Among hardliners, Ahmadinejads populist revives included regularly organized serenades for Irans nuclear rights. The president reported that Irans nuclear system was similar to a train without brakes, not vulnerable to redirection by outside weight. Slogans, stamps, banknotes and awards have to be substitutes for educated examination (essayforum.com, 2007). Two variables prodded extreme backfire and a response on the opposite side of the road. First, the United Nations forced a progression of U.N. resolutions somewhere around 2006 and 2010 that included correctional assents. The United States and the European Union forced significantly harder one-sided authorizations. For the Iranian open, the expenses of proceeded with resistance got to be progressively clear and muddled everyday life (essayforum.com, 2007). Second, Irans debated 2009 decision won by Ahmadinejad in the midst of across the board assertions of extortion started the biggest dissents against the administration since the 1979 upset. Another Green Movement resistance was conceived. Numerous progressives likewise had developing worries about the populist hardline president, especially his monetary blunder. Irans new political abyss rapidly started to play on the nuclear issue. Four months after the decision, Ahmadinejad consented to a United States supported interval assertion intended to facilitate strains and open the route for more extensive transactions on Irans long haul program. How The Product Will Be Marketed :: Business and Management Studies
How The Product Will Be Marketed The trainers will have to be repositioned in my adverts to appeal more to elderly people, which will mean finding the areas of current trainer adverts that are targeted at younger people and replace them with alternatives which are more aimed at older people. This should be done but I must make sure that the product is still represented how I want it at the end of my advert. I would like my product to be seen by older folks as something that can give them more speed, balance, and a physical advantage, whilst still being comfortable and with a smart appearance for a pair of trainers. Associating the product with these characteristics can do this. The Nike trainer advert I described in the introduction was of two sportsmen beating a man in a fight due to their amazing speed, given to them by their Nike footwear. If I was to make this appeal to over 60s then I would have to replace the two Nike-endorsing athletes with older alternatives, and to complete all my aims in general I would have to add something about how the trainers give you a more sophisticated look. Also my questionnaire revealed that 44% of elderly people believe that inflexibility in a shoe is the worst characteristic so this must be avoided and overcome. For my TV advert I have decided to have the camera focus the viewers on a man who is working out hard and training for a race, and he is talking how it has taken him so long to get here and how he's devoted his life to it. Then in the race an old man wearing Donaldsons trainers beats him. This links Donaldsons to achievement and success, and will appeal to older people because it shows how Donaldsons trainers can make them do things they could only do when they were young. Next in the advert the man is at a press conference in a suit still wearing the trainers, and he praises the shoes and claims they are why he won. This scene relates the brand to elegance and having a smart appearance, if a famous, successful man is wearing the Donaldsons with his suit. Also when he claims the Donaldsons made him win it shows that it doesn't matter how much physical ability you have beforehand, Donaldsons can make you amazingly good.

Introduction speech
My name is Sally and I'm a full-time student in Aviation Management & Services. It is an honor to stand here today, representing the class of 2014. First of all, congratulates to all fellow graduates for our success in TAP. The three years of hard work have finally paid off and now, we are ready to embark on a new chapter In our lives. How many of you still remember your very first day when you step Into the campus? Do you feel lost? Do you still remember when was the first occasion when you talked to that someone who is presently your closest friend? I believe many of you do encounter the problem of heart racing when you couldn't find your classroom on your first week of school and was still struggling to try to get used to the new people and new environment around you. However, this tough period has past and in a blink of an eye, we have all got closer with our classmates and have together created tons of wonderful memories during these three years. I guess what I will miss most af ter graduation will be the times here I had to rush for project deadlines with my group mates. It was almost every week that we had to stay back after school and also, spending countless sleepless nights to complete the projects.Indeed, it was a stressful period of time, but it trains us to work as a team and the sense of achievement and satisfaction after submitting a project that was well done is really indescribable. 4 Our time in TAP has been truly a great experience. The significant milestones that we had made were truly memorable. Recall back to the first orientation camp that we .NET to, our first presentation inferno of the class and our final year internship and major project has really shaped us to who we are today.A wise man once said that a journey Is best measured In smiles, rather than miles. I believe I wouldn't be what I am currently without the advice and support of many of the people here today. On behalf of Class of 2014, I would like to take this opportunity to t hank all the lecturers, tutors, family and friends who have supported us throughout the previous three 5 As we move on to the next phase of our lives, remember that graduation arks the end of one entryway and the opening of another. The future may be uncertain and surprise us, but here's some advice from Harvey McKay. He said: ââ¬Ë Find something you love to do, and you will never work a day in your life. â⬠That is pretty much(virtually) what TAP taught me as well, ââ¬Ë Love what you do, and you will be doing what you love. ââ¬Ë As we spread our wings to take off higher, let's all remember that we have come this far through hardwood, cooperation and discipline. Thank you ladies and gentlemen and to my fellow graduates, Happy Graduation!

Competition Bikes, Inc. Costing Method and CVP Report Essay
A1. Costing Method Recommendation This report has been prepared to analyze the current costing method at Competition Bikes, Inc. (CBI) and provide a recommendation for improvement. To support this analysis, the differences between traditional based costing and activity based costing will be examined, along with the benefits and drawbacks for each method. A cost-volume-profit evaluation with break-even analysis for both sales units and sales dollars for the CarbonLite and Titanium bike lines will also be provided. The main differences between activity-based costing and the traditional costing: Traditional costing includes both direct and indirect components. Indirect costs (overhead) are grouped together. Thereââ¬â¢s only one cost driver (such as direct labor hours) used to calculate costs regardless of what they are. Activity-based costing breaks down the overhead costs into activity cost pools. All overhead costs are then allocated into these activity cost pools. This method of costing does require more time to c ompute the cost to the activity yet it earns that money back plus dividends by having a more accurate forecast of the true costs that are associated with each activity. In addition to a better understanding of costs, implementation of activity-based costing can drive improved financial results in the long run. By looking at each product and what drives its specific costs, management can have a much more detailed sense of the true costs involved in producing each product. They can then compare the activity-based costs with the costing system they have been using to discover what products they may be overpricing, or underpricing for sale in the market. They can also spot potential money wasting activities in their manufacturing process, and work to make those activities more efficient. If management has a better understanding of costs, they can present a stronger business case to get future capital projects funded. The downside to activity-based costing is that it requires a substantial commitment of personnel and financial resources up front. Management must be willing to examine their operations rigorously and the data that is gathered may be difficult to accept, particularly by those who are believe the current costing system is just fine and are resistant to change. Traditional costing, on the other hand, is much easier to calculate than activity-based costing, and this makes managerââ¬â¢s jobs easier. However, traditional costing is so generally calculated that it may be hiding inefficiencies in the supply chain. Products may be overpriced or underpriced, and this can negatively impact the companyââ¬â¢s bottom line in the long run. By moving to the activity-based cost system, CBI could pinpoint if they have been overpricing items, losing market share to competitors. On the flip side, if they underprice an item, they are likely losing money as the price may be lower than what it costs to produce the bike. They would lose potential revenue to further fund research and development to improve the product for the future. If prices are significantly lower than those of the competition, customers may even hesitate to purchase the product, as they could wonder why the bike is priced so much lower than all the others in the market and have a perception that sub-par materials or manufacturing processes have been used. Since these bikes are a specialty product built to order, customers are generally not as price sensitive as shoppers looking for ready-made bikes. By switching to the activity based costing (ABC) method, CBI is also taking advantage of the in-depth knowledge of costs that will result in savings for the company. In the overhead analysis, six manufacturing overhead items and their cost drivers are identified, with a comparison provided between ABC costing, and Traditional costing assuming 900 units produced for the Titanium line, and 500 units produced for the Carbonlite line. The cost driver for manufacturing overhead using the traditional method is not identified, but the totals are given in the Competition Bikes spreadsheet and are reflected below. Traditional costing method -Titanium line manufacturing overhead cost: $239,020 -Carbonlite line manufacturing overhead cost: $232,380 Total traditional manufacturing overhead cost: $471,400 ABC costing method -Titanium line manufacturing overhead cost: $188,415 -Carbonlite line manufacturing overhead cost: $282,985 Total traditional manufacturing overhead cost: $471,400 Itââ¬â¢s important to note that the manufacturing overhead totals are identical when calculated using both traditional and ABC methods. This is because itââ¬â¢s not a difference in overhead, but instead a change in where the overhead is allocated. In the case of CBI, the allocation is quite different between methods. For the Titanium line, the total manufacturing overhead cost with ABC costing is $50,605 lower than with traditional costing ââ¬â a difference of 21%. In other words, CBI has overestimated manufacturing overhead for the Titanium line by 21% using traditional costing. Looking at unit costs, the traditional method per unit cost is $713, while the ABC unit cost is $656. The higher unit cost in the traditional costing method makes sense given that the allocation for manufacturing overhead was higher. CBI may be overpricing this bike, which could result in a negative effect on sales. If they could lower the price to a number closer to the true unit cost, they will likely see sales rise. For the Carbonlite line, the total manufacturing overhead cost with ABC costing is $50,605 higher than with traditional costing. CBI had underestimated manufacturing overhead for the Carbonlite line by 18% using traditional costing. Looking at unit costs, the traditional method per unit cost is $1,359, while the ABC unit cost is $1,460. The unit cost calculated using ABC costing was higher than CBI had realized; they are likely underpricing this bike, losing out on potential revenues. A review of competitorsââ¬â¢ prices may be in order, to evaluate what the market will bear, as well as an analysis of the impact of raising prices and how that affects sales. Once they have this data, CBI management can make an informed decision whether or not to adjust the Carbonlite sales price, and by how much. A2a. Cost-volume-profit and break-even point evaluation: Current scenario CVP Analysis: Cost-volume-profit (CVP) analysis is a tool that managers and businesses often use to estimate future levels of operational activity needed to avoid financial losses, to break even, and to generate a profit. This analysis also helps to target future revenues. CVP analysis can also be used to estimate production levels needed to generate revenues sufficient to recoup capital expenditures such as operational expansion. CVP analysis examines changes in profits in response to changes in sales volumes, costs and prices. The basic CVP equation is sales minus variable costs = contribution margin. Sales revenues per unit for the Titanium product are set at $900. The variable cost per unit (costs that vary directly with volume) for the Titanium product is $679. Based on these numbers, the resulting contribution margin (sales revenue minus variable cost) per unit is $900 ââ¬â $679 = $221. Contribution margin is the amount of profit left after variable costs are subtracted; therefore they c an be considered the ââ¬Ëcontributionââ¬â¢ to profit for each unit sold. For the Carbonlite product, the sales revenue per unit is higher at $1,495 due to the specialized materials and increased amount of labor required to manufacture the product. Variable cost is $1,384. The resulting contribution margin per unit is $1,495 ââ¬â $1,384 = $111. Itââ¬â¢s worth noting that the contribution margin for this product is much smaller than that for the Titanium line. A smaller contribution margin generally means the product is not as profitable. When multiple product lines are included in the analysis, to calculate total break-even sales units, a weighted average contribution margin (WACM) must be calculated. This is important because various products in the sales mix contribute different amounts of profit. The WACM is calculated by multiplying the unit contribution margin by the percentage of the total sales mix for each product. Expressed as a formula: WACM = Product one unit contribution margin (product one sales mix percentage) + product two unit contri bution margin (unit two contribution margin percentage) Incorporating the CBI data, with the sales mix proportion of 9 units of Titanium for every 5 units produced of Carbonlite, the WACM is calculated as 221 (.643) + 111 (.357) = $181.71. This number is what the average unità contributes to CBIââ¬â¢s profit on a per unit basis. When the WACM is known, the Total Contribution Margin Dollars can be calculated. This is the amount of money that the company has to pay fixed costs. Any money left over after fixed costs are paid is profit. If total contribution margin dollars equal fixed costs, the company is at break-even. If total contribution margin dollars are less than fixed costs, that represents a loss for the company. The equation for this figure is: Total Contribution Margin Dollars: Units sold multiplied by the WACM Break-even analysis Break-even sales units can be calculated if the WACM and Total Contribution Margin Dollars needed to break-even are known, as follows: Total Contribution Margin Dollars/WACM. To calculate sales units and sales dollars required for break-even, a few steps are required. The first step is to calculate the break-even point in units of sales mix. Break-even point in units of sales mix = Total fixed cost/WACM per unit For CBI, break-even point in units of sales mix is $400,000/$181.71 = 2201 The next step is to calculate the number of units of Titanium and Carbonlite units at the break-even point. The equation is as follows: Number of units at break-even point = Sales mix ratio (total break even units) Break-even point in units for Titanium: 0.643 (2201) = 1415 Break-even point in units for Carbonlite: 0.357 (2201) = 786 The last step is to calculate the break-even point in dollars. The equation is as follows: Break-even point in dollars = Product units at break-even point (sales price per unit) Break-even point in dollars for Titanium: 1415 (900) = $1,273,500 Break-even point in dollars for Carbonlite: 786 (1495) = $1,175,070 Total sales needed to break-even: $1,273,500 + $1,175,070 = $2,448,570. To summarize, CBI would need to sell 1415 units of Titanium and 786 units of Carbonlite, generating sales revenues of $2,448,570 to break-even (revenues and costs are equal). A2b. Cost-volume-profit and break-even point evaluation: Variable and fixed cost increase scenarios Suppose management needed to increase the cost of direct materials by 10% as well as addà $50,000 in fixed costs to the production facility. What effect would this have on the break-even point? Because the equations are based on the contribution margin as well as the WACM, an increase in the cost of direct materials (variable costs) by 10% will have a significant impact. Letââ¬â¢s first examine how cost-volume-profit and break-even point would be impacted if management needed to increase direct materials cost by 10%. I will analyze the $50,000 fixed cost increase separately. Variable cost increase (10% direct materials increase) scenario CVP Analysis: Contribution Margin per unit for Titanium: $900 ââ¬â $709 = $191 Contribution Margin per unit for CarbonLite: $1495 ââ¬â $1451 = $44 The contribution margins for both product lines decreased. Titanium decreased by 13%, and of particular note is the whopping 60% reduction in contribution margin for Carbonlite. This makes sense given that Carbonline has a higher variable cost and lower volume, so a percentage increase in variable cost has a greater impact. This product is even more expensive to produce in this scenario, and generating very low profits for the company at this point. With the sales mix proportion of 9 units of Titanium for every 5 units produced of Carbonlite, the WACM per unit is calculated as 191 (.643) + 44 (.357) = $138.50. CVP Summary: the 10% increase in direct materials resulted in a 24% decrease in WACM per unit. The bikes are contributing 24% less profit towards profits. Break-even Analysis: Break-even point in units of sales mix is $400,000/$138.50 = 2888 Break-even point in units for Titanium: 0.643 (2888) = 1857 Break-even point in units for Carbonlite: 0.357 (2888) = 1031 Break-even point in dollars for Titanium: 1857 (900) = $1,671,300 Break-even point in dollars for Carbonlite: 1031 (1495) = $1,541,345 Total sales needed to break-even: $1,671,300 + $1,541,345 = $3,212,645 Break-even summary: the 10% increase in direct materials cost resulted in a reduced contribution margin per unit for both products. Given that fixed costs in this example were unchanged at $400,000, it makes sense that an increase in variable costs would require an increase in the break-even point to cover the additional expense. In this scenario, the break-even point in units and total sales need to break-even increased by 24% from the current scenario. Itââ¬â¢s clear that an increase in variable costs can have a disproportionate impact on profits and the break-even point. Fixed cost increase ($50,000) scenario For this scenario, I assumed that variable costs remained unchanged from the current scenario (no 10% increase in variable costs) and that fixed cost for the production facility increased from $400,000 to $450,000. CVS Analysis: Contribution margin per unit for Titanium: $900 ââ¬â $679 = $221 Contribution margin for per unit for Carbonlite: $1,495 ââ¬â $1,384 = $111 With the sales mix proportion of 9 units of Titanium for every 5 units produced of Carbonlite, the WACM per unit is calculated as 221 (.643) + 111 (.357) = $181.71. CVS Summary: Since variable costs did not change in this scenario, the contribution margin per unit and weighted average contribution margin/unit are at the same level as the original example. Break-even Analysis: Break-even point in units of sales mix is $450,000/$181.71 = 2476 Break-even point in units for Titanium: 0.643 (2476) = 1592 Break-even point in units for Carbonlite: 0.357 (2476) = 884 Break-even point in dollars for Titanium: 1592 (900) = $1,432,800 Break-even point in dollars for Carbonlite: 884 (1495) = $1,321,580 Total sales needed to break-even: $1,432,800 + $1,321,580 = $2,754,380 Break-even summary: Compared to the current scenario, the $50,000 increase in fixed costs (11% over the $400,000 example in the current scenario) had an impact of increasing the break-even point in units of sales mix by 275à units, or 11%. Since the contribution margin was unchanged in this example, the increase is less than in the scenario with 10% increase in direct materials. The break-even point in dollars also increased by 11%. The fact that the increase in the break-even point exactly matches the increase in fixed costs illustrates that as fixed costs rise, the break-even point will rise in proportion assuming the sales mix remains unchanged. Comparing all three scenarios, the CVP and break-even analysis provides insight on how increases in variable and fixed costs affect contribution margins and break-even numbers. Variable cost increases have a disproportionate impact on increasing margins and break-even numbers, while the fixed cost increases result in a proportionate impact on increasing these measures. CBIââ¬â¢s management should consider these impacts when considering cost increases for their product lines.

Predicting the 20 Most Populous Countries in 2050
Predicting the 20 Most Populous Countries in 2050 In 2017,à the UN Population Division released a revision of itsà Worldà Population Prospects,à a regularly-issued report that analyzes world population changes and other world demographics, estimated out to 2100. The recent report revision noted that the world population increase has slowed a bit, and is expected to continue to slow, with an estimated 83 million people added to the world every year. Population Overall Grows The United Nations forecasts the global population to reach 9.8 billion in the year 2050, and growth is expected to continue until then, even assuming that the decline in fertility would increase. An aging population overall causes fertility to decline, as well as women in more developed countries not having the replacement rate of 2.1 children per woman. If the fertility rate of a country is lower than the replacement rate, population declines there. The world fertility rate was 2.5 as of 2015 but declining slowly. By 2050, the number of people over age 60 will more than double, as compared with 2017, and the number over 80 will triple. Life expectancy worldwide is projected to rise from 71 in 2017 to 77 by 2050.à Overall Continent and Country Changes by 2050 More than half of the forecast growth in world population will come in Africa, with an estimated rise in population of 2.2 billion. Asia is next. Asia is expected to add more than 750 million people between 2017 and 2050. Next are the Latin America and Caribbean region, then North America. Europe is the only region anticipated to have a lower population in 2050 as compared with 2017. India is expected to pass China in population in 2024, Chinas population is projected to stay stable and then to slowly fall, while Indias is rising. Nigerias population is growing the most quickly and is forecast to take over the United States number three position in world population around 2050. Fifty-one countries are projected to see a decline in population by 2050, and ten are estimated to drop by at least 15 percent, though many of them are not largely populated. The percentage per person is higher than in a country with a large population, such asà Bulgaria, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Moldova, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine, and the U.S. Virgin Islands (territory counted independently from the United States population). The least-developed countries grow more quickly than those with mature economies, but also send more people as immigrants to the more developed nations. What Goes Into the List Following is a list of the 20à most populous countries in the year 2050, presuming there are no significant boundary changes. Variables that go into the projections include trends in fertility and its rate of decline over the next decades, infant/child survival rates, numbers of adolescent mothers, AIDS/HIV, migration, and life expectancy.à Largest Populations by Country in 2050 India: 1,659,000,000à China: 1,364,000,000Nigeria: 411,000,000United States: 390,000,000Indonesia: 322,000,000Pakistan: 307,000,000Brazil: 233,000,000Bangladesh: 202,000,000Democratic Republic of the Congo: 197,000,000Ethiopia: 191,000,000Mexico: 164,000,000Egypt: 153,000,000Philippines: 151,000,000à Tanzania: 138,000,000Russia: 133,000,000Vietnam: 115,000,000Japan: 109,000,000à Uganda: 106,000,000Turkey: 96,000,000Kenya: 95,000,000à Source World Population Prospects: The 2017 Revision. Filial Piety in China essays
Filial Piety in China essays Xiao, the Chinese word for filial piety is the defining feature in Chinese culture as filial piety was extolled as the highest virtue in China for centuries. I subscribe to the school of thought that filial piety is the root of Chinese ethics and "with it all enlightening studies come into existence." Chinese society was built upon the doctrine of filial piety and that it is the theme in Chinese culture, influencing all aspects of Chinese lives. In this essay, I will examine the significance of filial piety in Chinese culture. Albeit I have no wish of making the mistake of generalization, what I seek to define is the undercurrent theme in all Chinese families which I believe is filial piety. As I believe that filial piety is the common thread that runs in every Chinese family. I am fully aware that my study of filial piety does not apply to every Chinese family, so I can only say that I am sure filial piety endures in different forms, having been infiltrated through many generations and eroded by different events. In order to make my stand, I will be exploring the traditional meaning of filial piety in China, if and how various incidents may have impacted filial piety in China. I will also be analyzing the implications of the erosion of filial piety and the importance of filial piety in modern China. To define traditional filial piety in Chinese culture, it is imperative that I draw on the works of Confucius as Confucianism is the system that has dominated Chinese thought throughout most of history, controlling Chinese education, society and government for some 2,000 years. It would be necessary to take into account Mencius's philosophy as he was also a strong influence on Chinese culture. Xiao in traditional Chinese societies fundamentally means gratitude to one's parents for giving one life and the duty and obligation to repay one's parents for having brought one up. It means love and uncompromising respect for one'...

5 Things We Wish Wed Been Told When Starting College
5 Things We Wish Wed Been Told When Starting College 5 Things We Wish Weââ¬â¢d Been Told When Starting College Starting college can be tough. Youââ¬â¢ve got new ideas to wrestle with, new friends to make, and you have to get used to looking after yourself. Here are 5 things we wish someone had told us when we first started college. 1) Donââ¬â¢t Buy Books! You might have been told to go out and buy all the books on your reading list, but this isnt usually necessary. Any college library worth its salt will have plenty of the required books. Just make sure you get there before the other students snap them up! And if you get really stuck, you can always get cheap hand-me-downs from last years students. 2) Choose One Club Itââ¬â¢s really easy to get sucked into signing up for 10 clubs in the first week at college. Sure, archery, salsa dancing, the Russian food club and white water rafting all sound great, but will you really have the time? Better to wait a few months before buying any expensive equipment to make sure you are really committed, rather than spending loads of money on a wetsuit and sailing shoes in your first week only to use them about four times. 3) Start Writing Your Papers Early Itââ¬â¢s so tempting to put off writing a paper until a week before it is due. However, youââ¬â¢ll save yourself a lot of stress and time if you start writing as soon as the title is set. If you get into the habit now, youââ¬â¢ll be an expert when you get into your final year. 4) Save the Introduction until Last Another great writing tip is, once youve planned your paper, to skip writing the introduction until last. This will help you help you write a really strong opening, since youll have a much better sense of what the paper is about. 5) Take it Easy on the Drink College is a time for partying, sure, but you will find that relentless drinking will take its toll sooner than you think. Thereââ¬â¢s so much to get used to in your first year of college, so itââ¬â¢ll be a hell of a lot easier without a constant hangover! Try alternating alcoholic drinks with soft drinks and having a few alcohol-free nights a week. Itââ¬â¢ll help you stay emotionally balanced and make life much easier!

Confucian Moral Theory and Practice Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Confucian Moral Theory and Practice - Essay Example The fundamental constructs of Confucian morality, in their independent nature, cannot comprehensively describe Confucian morality unless there is some form of connection between two or more of these constructs. As such, the five critical constructs have to be considered independently to form the basis for introducing the Confucian moral theory and practice in East Asia. First off is the concept of merging social-political reform to self-cultivation. According to Confuciusââ¬â¢ belief, the establishment of political order on social order was essential and personal cultivation coined this social order, albeit among the members of the society: ââ¬Å"From the Son of Heaven down to the mass of the people, the cultivation of the self is the foundation of everything besidesâ⬠(Lai 24). Confucius contends that the self-cultivation of individuals will translated into the rectification of the hearts and, therefore, the spillover effects would see the other people get cultivated as wel l. A cultivated society would lead to families that are regulated, and thus, the whole State would be justifiably governed. Rightly, governed States would give rise to a kingdom that calm and glad (24). Intrinsically, the connection between personal cultivation and the social-political reform is overly strong and this sets ground for Confucian morality. The second concept of Confucian morality is the pursuit of dao. Dao refers to a method, doctrine, path of truth or in accordance to the moral teachings.

Management accounting- S-10 Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 5000 words
Management accounting- S-10 - Assignment Example " Because various frameworks in the living, social and innovative planet may be grasped thusly, cybernetics cuts over numerous accepted disciplinary borders. The notions which cyberneticians improve along these lines structure a meta-disciplinary dialect through which we might better comprehend and alter our planet. Throughout the period when Anthony's accounting based approach to management control picked up prominence (1960s), the organizational hypothesis written works greatly slanted to a systems-theory perspective. This tendency impacted management control hypothesis and it got indivisible from organizational theory as a rule. To grasp the profundity of the impact that system theory had on management control hypothesis, it is vital to examine the primary tenets of systems theory. In addition, it is imperative to inspect the crux parts of the systems perspective as it affected the route in which classical theory evolved. The systems perspective was established in cybernetics and general systems theory (GST). Norbert Wiener's (1948) cybernetics idea illustrates the methodology of correspondence and control around individuals and machines to achieve alluring goals and to guide the automatic standards discovered in human biotic frameworks onto machines frameworks (Kloot, 1997, p. 49). Cybernetics is concerned with programmed regulation and control of living beings and conglomerations. It is said that cybernetics utilization a negative sentiment circle acted for by setting objectives, measuring accomplishment, contrasting accomplishment and objectives, bolstering back qualified information about unwanted fluctuations into the procedure to be regulated, and rectifying the procedure. As per this perspective, a management control handle in its best disentangled structure is comparative to a specialized control prepare, looking like the control of the high temperature of a room by a thermostat. Anthony's accounting control philosophy was effortlessly interlaced wit h the notion of robotic controls (Otley, et al., 1995, p. 44). In any case, the GST tries to clarify conduct by mulling over the interrelationship of parts as opposed to the nature of the aforementioned parts. A system is a gathering of interrelated parts functioning all in all. Particularly, a system is an arranged or complex entire; a collection or fusion of things or parts framing an intricate or unitary entire. A conglomeration, thusly, could be acknowledged a gathering of interrelated parts filling in general. There may be diverse subsystems that could be associated with structure much bigger systems. The systems view expects that to remember completely grasp the capacity of the entire systems; the interrelationships around diverse parts must be grasped. A framework is said to have a border, and hinging on the level of communication by the systems with its external border, a framework might be acknowledged either an open framework or a shut systems (provided that it doesn't col laborate with the earth). From the systems view, a conglomeration is made out of information, process, and yield parts, and additionally associated subsystems with a plainly outlined framework verge. As clear from the expositive expression, the framework theorists and the cyberneticians joined both hypotheses to demonstrate capacities of conglomerations and all the more in particular the capacity of administration control frameworks. The degree of the impact by cybernetics hypothesis on administration co
Monopolies Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Monopolies - Essay Example The demand curve of a monopolistic seller is the same as that of market demand, as the firm forms the entire industry. In the picture below (fig 1), the D represents the market demand for the product which is the same as the monopolistic sellerââ¬â¢s demand curve. In a perfect competition, a particular seller takes up the price set by the market. Hence the demand is horizontal, in the case of this purely competitive seller. However, this line is determined by the market demand and supply curves. This difference in the demand curves of the two types of market structures is very significant. From fig. 1, it is clear that when the monopolistic seller raises the price of the product, the seller may lose some of its buyers. However, the firm will not lose its revenue. In the case of a purely competitive seller, the price is set by the market and hence any price above this will result in buyers switching to other sellers who offer the same product at the market price. All firms in any market maximise their profits when their marginal cost equals the marginal revenue (MR = MC). In the case of a purely competitive seller, the marginal revenue is the same as that of the firmââ¬â¢s demand curve. However, in the case of a monopoly, the marginal revenue curve falls twice as that of the firmââ¬â¢s demand curve (starting form the same point). Hence the marginal cost intersects the marginal curve at a very low value in the case of monopoly. Hence the monopolists maximise their profits by producing lower quantities at higher prices. The main phenomenon to be noted in the case of monopolistic demand curve is that, it is not typically purely inelastic. In the case of a purely inelastic demand, the demand for a product is not affected by the price changes at all. However in the case of a pure monopolistic seller, as said earlier, when the price is raised, the firm loses some of its buyers. The buyers generally buy a

Martin Luther King, Jr - Essay Example Organised a non-violent protest march which served to dramatise these ugly realities of America and emphasise the nature of true democracy. He delivers the historically famous speech: ââ¬Å"I have a dreamâ⬠and he says ââ¬Å"black men as well as white men would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happinessâ⬠. This historical landmark highlighted the necessity of democracy that offered equal rights to all its citizens irrespective of their colour and race. The non-violent movement fought for this equality. Furthermore, he says, ââ¬Å"Now is the tine to lift our nation from the quicksands of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood. Now is the time to make justice a reality for all Godââ¬â¢s children. ...all men are created equalâ⬠. So, the later part of the book starts so emphatically on the high note of equality and justice. It continues the same till 29th chapter. Racial inequality and brutality was commonplace. Notions about black were very common. But, to remove these misconceptions was the primary motive of the movement. He says, ââ¬Å"We must use every constructive means to amass economic and political power. This is the kind of legitimate power we need. We must work to build racial pride and refute the notion that black is evil and ugly. But this must come through a program, not merely through a sloganâ⬠. Martin Luther King Jr. finds gaining political and economic power is the best way to gain what they wanted. ââ¬Å"Black Powerâ⬠was coined and put into currency. Civil rights was the motive. But, Martin Lutherââ¬â¢s interpretation of the means to achieve Black Power was different from his contemporaries who considered militant ways. The negotiation was done so effectively that legal grounds are cited to justify the protest and March. The then Civil rights movement could have been one of the earliest instances of the voice of the voiceless, but it continues to this day in various forms, wherever prejudice or

John F Kennedy - Research Paper Example John on one hand was a Boston mayor from 1906 to 1908 while Patrick on the other hand was a senate representative for Massachusetts in 1892. This may be noted as a contributing factor towards the rise and success of John Kennedy and some of his brothers in American politics (Weber 26). During his childhood, Kennedy is said to have suffered normal ailments such as chicken pox, measles and other infections that affect young children but of significance is that he was diagnosed with a rare scarlet fever infection when he was 3 years old. The infection is said to be one of the most dangerous and communicable diseases and this worried his parents a lot, especially his father, who went to the extent of promising that he would donate half of his had earned savings to charity if his son recovered from this condition. However, Kennedy was a fighter and to the surprise of many, he was able to overcome the threat within approximately three months and true to his word, Kennedyââ¬â¢s father fu lfilled his promise by donating more than half of his entire savings to charity (Thomas 17). The Kennedy family lived in Brookline until when he was 10 years old after which they moved to New York City especially due to the success his father had in business, which made it possible to relocate to a larger and spacious house. During the 10 years before relocation, Kennedy had attended 3 schools which were; Edward Devotion School, Noble and Greenbush Lower School, and the Dexter School, where he completed his 4th grade. Once in New York, he was enrolled into Riverdale country school, where he studied up to the 7th grade after which, he joined the Canterbury school for his 8th grade (Thomas 31). Statistic Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Statistic - Essay Example Since the figure bracket we are wondering about is somewhere between $45 and $50k, we must use the product rule and the sum rule to gain the answer. The chances of a graduate earning a $45k salary begins in the first noted price bracket but is only represented by the second half of that bracket. That means we must multiply 50% x 33% = 17%. This is the same for the second and third bracket requiring us to employ the sum rule. 17% + 17% = 33%. B. The probability of a new graduate making a starting salary which exceeds 55k is as follows: The farther away we get from the mean, the more income brackets need to be added in both directions in order to maintain $47,500 as the mean leaving only a 20% chance of a new graduate being hired at a starting salary of 55k or more. C. The percentage of staring salaries which are no more than $42,250 is a 36% chance. This was calculated by representing 5 brackets with 20% chances: 38.5k, 43k, 47.5k, 52k and 56.5k all with a 20% chance each due to even distribution. The bracket between 38.5k and 43.k together represent a 40% chance cumulatively. Those brackets can be divided into smaller brackets leaving the bracket of 42.5 k and everything beneath that amount represented by a 36% chance. First, let us allow n to represent the sample size and N to represent the population size. In the event that the value of n is greater than 5% of the finite population N, the population correction factor may be used. In this case, n=40 and N=500. The sample population is equal to 8% of the finite population of 500 which is again, represented by N. B. To establish standard of error utilizing the given information thus far, we can use the formula , which represents the variability of the original data which can divided by the square root n. We may also find the answer by utilizing the following formula: ((N-n)/N-1)) which gives us the number 9.5917 as our standard error. Using

WRITE A sidebar, along the lines of the sidebar in HK Chs. for one of the HK chapters - Essay Example But South Koreans were able to surmount their obstacles through creative inputs of their citizens and contribution from International Monetary Fund or IMF. IMFââ¬â¢s bailout package of $57 billion had come with huge conditions. The structural reforms were implemented in the form of massive layoff, shutting off of banks, control of IMF vis-à -vis decision making in tax rates, interest rates of central banks. These had huge cascading ramifications on the people at large. They were force to liberalize their economic policy to facilitate foreign market entry, cutting taxes and drastically reducing government spending at the cost of public welfare. But Korean people were not prepared to take the economic depression placidly. They came to the rescue of their country through personal commitment and proactive participation. This was one of the most unique and exemplary exhibition of patriotism. The citizens of Korea donated gold from their personal collection of jewellery to the movement and collected whopping $2.2 billion from 3.5 million Korean citizens. Huge queue of the enthusiastic citizens could be seen at various collection centres. Eight tonnes of gold was collected in first week (bbc.com) Koreans were very sensitive to their countryââ¬â¢s vulnerability to the exploits of IMF which had forced them to liberalize their economy for foreign market. They showed their resentment by reducing their imports by promoting goods made in their country only. They focused on strong manufacturing exports to improve their economic conditions (koreatimes.com). Koreans have been renowned for their love of their country. Influences of the Norwegian Language
Influences of the Norwegian Language Task A Do you have a rack at home with a CD player, tuner and equalizer? Or do you simply use a discman? If nothing else you may have a walkman? What kind of clothes do you wear? Is it a sweatshirt, jeans and boots? Do you eat fast food, or use a food processor to make something good? The Norwegian language is in relation to the majority of the worlds languages a medium-sized language. Most people are probably wondering whether the Norwegian language will survive in the next thousand years, or will more and more Norwegians go on to use English, so that within a short time, Norwegian will have gone completely into oblivion? So why do we really have all those English words in our language? There are several reasons for it, and thats what Im going to talk about in this article. I could have written 20 pages about the influence in the mass media for example, but I am going to focus on giving you a general overview of English influence instead. One of the reasons of this influence is that we constantly get new products, with English names. Just think of all those words that has followed with computer technology. Take for example: Software, hard drive and back up. Its entirely possible to find a Norwegian name for these new products, but I am not alone when I say that most people in Norway say PC (personal computer) instead of PD (personlig databehandler). English has a strong position as an international language in many areas of society, as in business, in science, in technology and not least in the mass media. American culture dominates in many areas in Norway. Ask yourself these questions: How many times a year do you go to the cinemas? On how many of those visits do you watch American films? Another thing is if you listen to a local radio station, I dont think that its wrong to say that 90% of the music being played is English. Previously it has been German and French who have given us the majority of foreign words, but today, it is English, which gives us the majority. It is said that English words and influence, is the biggest problem for the Norwegian language today. Education in Norway has been far better when it comes to English and it is said that the Scandinavian countries are world champions in English! Language Scientists believe that many English words from teaching at school go straight into the daily speech of youths. In youth environments its easy to be influenced by English. This applies especially to such persons who enjoy music. Pop and rap artists usually sing their songs in English. The young people learn the lyrics and use the English words in their everyday speech. Retail chains have found out that young people buy more clothes if the goods have English names, such as jeans, boots, shirts, and that young people eat chips, snacks and burgers. Advertising and marketing play a key role in the English influence. Words such as hot, happy, fun and sexy are often used to spice up their sentences and make the advertisements more attractive. Earlier all titles of English language movies were translated into Norwegian. Today however most movies keep their original titles, and only a few titles are translated, mainly movies meant for kids. Science is also a contributor to this. The United States has been leading the scientific research in the recent decades, and therefore new discoveries and theories are presented in English. Tons of new products and new product categories are created in the United States and spread worldwide with English names. Moreover, just think of something as ordinary as a car. There are many English words used. We say: gear, clutch, coil, choke, dash, etc. The technological development gives us many opportunities, but at the same time, there is no doubt that new technology and new media represent a risk for small language communities. Also local cultural activities and traditions are in danger of becoming more and more uniform in globalizations wake. Last but not least, we have everyday language and slang. We are messengers spreading the English on to others. One can, for example, say that some new expressions have come with immigration. Another thing is that foreign words are more likely to come into the language of a big city than in a small village. There are several people in a metropolis and, not to mention, several immigrants. These are reasons why the language is affected. We can adapt a lot of English words to Norwegian without major problems. This is especially true for words like stress, sports, bullying, plotting, tackling and smart. These words can easily be used in Norwegian, because they can follow the Norwegian inflection. But just as many words create problems in the system. Many of the words like jeans, thriller, image, seed, slide and walkman, are difficult to adapt to the Norwegian writing rules. We have become so accustomed to English being around us 24 hours a day, that we do not always notice its there. It has become so uncommon making own words, that many people find it funny when people resort to our own language elements and create a new word of them. When the word utblà ¥sing was launched as the replacement for the English word blow-out, there is no denying that some people wrinkled their nose a bit. Yet the word has now been through, and is an example of how words can seem a bit comical at first, but after a short time become quite natural to use. Sitting down in front of the computer at home today, you can communicate with people from all over the world. For only a hundred years ago it would have taken weeks from a letter was sent, to the recipient in another country would receive it. New technology has made the world smaller. Norwegian media are more likely to communicate with the foreign media, and therefore gain insight into foreign news. It is no longer for granted that one must study in Norway, or work here. Norwegians have become internationalized, and we know that there is more than Little Norway. The question on whether the Norwegian language is going to disappear, I personally think no, but it is frightening to think that in the future there may be a completely different Norwegian language than the Norwegian language we speak today. You are influenced by your mother, your father, your siblings, the boss at your job, the TV program you saw last night, the commercial that was shown before the television program you saw , you heard the radio broadcast on way to school this morning, the newspaper you read at the breakfast table. All this has given you English influence, perhaps without you even thinking of it. The world community has an impact on how language changes, and as long as people in society changes, the language will do the same.

A Clockwork Orange: Review Of Book And Firm Version Essay -- essays re
A Clockwork Orange: Review of Book and Firm Version In A Clockwork Orange, Alex, the narrator and the main character, tells the story of his teenage years, starting at fifteen. He begins his tale as the leader of a small gang that spends its evenings pillaging and wreaking havoc on the town until the gang mutinies and "Your Humble Narrator," as Alex refers to himself, is caught by the police. From there, Alex travels to State Jail 84F to serve 14 years, but receives an offer from "the Government" which entails undergoing experimental treatment in return for early release. He seizes what seems to him an opportunity, but is horrified by the "cure" he endures. The new "good" Alex that is released unto the world is depressed, frustrated, and lonely, although no longer violent. A radical political group then exploits him as an example of the cruelty of "the Government." This faction tries to force Alex to suicide in order to gain a martyr, but Alex's attempt fails and he is nursed back to health and his natural mental state by the Government, who in the end comes out on top. Alex, whose last name is not mentioned in the book, is a violent, aggressive teenager of fifteen, who is the leader of a four-person gang. He truly enjoys violence, reveling in the sight of blood or weapons. Alex's love of hate is not simply a rebellious emotion, but as he explains, it is his very nature, and he could not change it if he wanted to. Despite his passion for what most see as ugly and disgusting, Alex does have a great appreciation for classical music, especially Beethoven. Alex's main conflicts are both external and internal. His external conflicts are between him and the members of his gang. Dim and Georgie, two of the members of Alex's gang, are unwilling to accept Alex's leadership. A Clockwork Orange: Review Of Book And Firm Version Essay -- essays re A Clockwork Orange: Review of Book and Firm Version In A Clockwork Orange, Alex, the narrator and the main character, tells the story of his teenage years, starting at fifteen. They challenge his authority, and Alex reacts rashly by trying to re- establish his dominance through defeating both of his aggressors in fighting. This confrontation only raises tensions within the gang, and leads to a betrayal which results in Alex's capture on the charge of murder. Alex's main internal conflict is a physiological one. Why Some Forms of Opposition Were More Successful than Others in the Pe
Why Some Forms of Opposition Were More Successful than Others in the Period 1798-1921 The Act of Union, 1801. Ireland was to be joined to Great Britain into a single kingdom, the Dublin parliament was to be abolished. Ireland was to be represented at Westminster (all were Anglicans), the Anglican Church was to be recognised as the official Church of Ireland, no Catholics were to be allowed to hold public office and there was to be no Catholic Emancipation. Immediately we can see from this that any form of opposition would be to destroy this act. Fundamentally it destroyed all catholic rights and forced them to renounce their Catholic faith and take on a Protestant one. In Ireland Daniel O'Connell developed a reputation for his radical political views. By the early 1920's the Irish people started to listen to O'Connell's views and he gathered a large group of supporters. O'Connell had many aims in his political career. O'Connell's goal was to repeal against the act of union. When the Act of Union was passed in 1801 it did not help the Irish. It simply brought problems and distrust to the Irish people. O'Connell organised a meeting to discuss the repeal of the Act of Union, three quarters of a million Irish turned up. They were known as 'Monster Meetings'. We can see that O'Connell successfully created an Irish nation movement and completely changed the British view of the Irish. The British now had a certain amount of respect for the Irish and even feared and threatened their movement. This support from the people could show us the later success that O'Connell has in his opposition, as a movement without opposition would ultimately ... ...d in the cruellest yet effective way possible. Collins achievements were many: he helped fight the British to a stalemate by changing the rules of warfare and setting up an intelligence network to rival the Empire's. He helped negotiate a treaty, which gave Ireland the first stepping stone to become a Republic, and oversaw Ireland's turbulent transition to democracy. His achievements were, however, not without a price. He precipitated the bloody War of Independence against the British and the treaty deal brought back from London split the country into two fiercely opposing halves and plunged the country into the throes of a traumatic civil war. Thus ultimately opposition needed to be well organised and have enough support to succeed, constitutional nationalism had this through its methods of working through the system.

Anna M. Kerttulaââ¬â¢s ââ¬ÅAntler on the Seaââ¬Â Essay
In her book, Antler on the Sea, Kerttula discusses how Soviet government policies aimed to integrate the northern peoples of the USSR in reality helped the groups to maintain their identities as they defined themselves in opposition to one another. According to Kerttula, ââ¬Å"in Sireniki, the very system that sought to control and homogenize difference reinforced itâ⬠(155). Kerttula illustrates the extent to which much of the native culture has survived the Soviet period. This trend is particularly prevalent as Kerttula progresses through her descriptions of Yupââ¬â¢ik, Chukchi, and ââ¬ËNewcomerââ¬â¢ lifestyle and practices. The development of collective group identity and cultural transformation among northern indigenous peoples in the Soviet Union was heavily influenced not only by the structure of the Soviet system but also by the provoking of oppositional relationships between the groups. Kerttula effortlessly explains the interrelationships of the many opposing ââ¬Ëforcesââ¬â¢: tundra and sea, Yupââ¬â¢ik and Chukchi, natives and newcomers, and old and new ways in the North. These relationships were based on prior cultural forms, symbols and meanings but as a result of Soviet influence, local cultural boundaries were transformed and the ensuing dialogue of difference was encouraged. As Kerttula asserts, it is the ââ¬Å"we/they dichotomy that for many anthropologists defines an ethnic groupâ⬠(152). The Soviet state, with its ideological, political and economic goals, changed the structure of the interactions between local and immigrant groups, but was unable to change the cultural content of their discourse. According to Kerttula, historically the Yupââ¬â¢ik, Chukchi and Russians had very limited contact with one another. Prior to forced relocations and settlements that occurred with collectivization, the Yupââ¬â¢ik lived at Sireniki and met with the Chukchi occasionally for the limited purpose of trade (123). After collectivization the three groups were forced to live in a single locality and thus new dynamics and an increased frequency of interaction changed the ways that the Yupââ¬â¢ik, Chukchi, and Russians (Newcomers) worked together. As Kerttula points out, the cultural definitions and descriptors of the three groups were not always in agreement; quite often they clashed. For example, Kerttula generalizes on the Newcomerââ¬â¢s feelings of superiority to the Yupââ¬â¢ikà and Chukchi. Accordingly, ââ¬Å"this attitude of superiority was intensified by the physical separation of the three groups, both at their place of work and in their free timeâ⬠(152). It was the Newcomerââ¬â¢s familiarity with the Russian social structure that in fact led to this so-called ââ¬Ësuperiorityââ¬â¢ (152). Similarly, the Yupââ¬â¢ik and Chukchi view one another as, for instance, receiving favoritism in their language instructions at the local school. Parents are cited as believing the other group to be receiving better instruction: ââ¬Å"The Chukchi complained that there were more Yupââ¬â¢ik lessons than Chukotkan, and Yupââ¬â¢ik parents complained that the quality of the Yupââ¬â¢ik lessons were substa ndardâ⬠(154). Unlike the Nivkhi described by Grant, the Yupââ¬â¢ik and Chukchi do not express a feeling of ââ¬Ëculturelessnessââ¬â¢. As both groups have been able to maintain dominant aspects of their traditional lifestyle, the sense of loss seemed to be felt to a lesser degree (although they did ââ¬Ëloseââ¬â¢ language and the freedom to hunt whales). The Yupââ¬â¢ik could remain defined primarily by their affinity for and connections to the sea while the Chukchi could remain defined primarily by their affinity for and connections to the tundra. Modernity within the community of Sireniki was integrated in a way that was advantageous for the people. As Kerttula points out however, instead of questioning the governmentââ¬â¢s socialist tactics, most looked more locally to the ââ¬Ëothersââ¬â¢ in the community (151, 153). These collective identities enabled the Yupââ¬â¢ik, Chukchi, and Newcomers to accept Soviet designated social and economic conditions by infusing these conditions with their own cultural knowledge, making them meaningful and reproducible. Kerttula captures the disharmony tolerated by indigenous people in the Soviet period as they retained their own beliefs and customs while adapting to altered environments and economic change. As Kerttula reiterates many times, modernity has brought many unexpected and unwelcome changes. Most importantly, the state has used the discourse of modernity to once again portray indigenous peoples in a way that suits their needs as an administrative body. Instead of looking to the heavy restrictions enforced by the Soviet system, the people of Sireniki ââ¬Å"focused their discourse on each otherâ⬠and looked to each other as being a source of some of their problems (155). Toward the end of her book, Kerttula points out a fundamental problem in the collective group definitions: if the groups defined their identities in opposition to one another, what happens to those who married cross-culturally? In her discussion of possible division within the community into different associations, this problem came to the forefront. As one of Kerttulaââ¬â¢s informants asks, to which association would the child of both Yupââ¬â¢ik and Chukchi parents belong? (152). Theoretically the three groups existed separate from the other two. In reality though, intermarriage and the creation of friendships were relatively common inter-ethnically. The individual cultures were not only subjective, but also laden with political and social questions of identity and personhood (151). What makes the case at Sireniki unique is that three distinct cultural groups were essentially forced to live together in relative peace while each simultaneously sought to prolong and promote their own traditional practices and beliefs. Kerttulaââ¬â¢s investigation and analysis is of how collective identities were facilitated among the two indigenous groups and one immigrant group in order to maintain their cultures in the face of rapidly changing social and material circumstances (153).

Haitian Revolution
Rationale The researcher chose to investigate this topic because she is solely interested I finding out why Haitiââ¬â¢s socio-economic structure deteriorated after the Haitian Revolution ended in 1804. It has always been the curiosity of the researcher to discover Haitiââ¬â¢s state prior to this major revolt and also to find out the factors which caused the socio-economic break down of the colony. This research seeks to educate the researcher and whoever may read it in an effort to broaden their knowledge on Haitiââ¬â¢s socio-economic structure and why it is the way it is.Introduction The Haitian Revolution was a strategy used by African slaves in Haiti to resist slavery. In the 18th century, Haiti was the richest colony in the entire Caribbean and was the largest market of cane sugar. They accounted for half the sugar used in the Americas and Europe; they also produced cotton, coffee and indigo which were also used in developing France socially and economically.Even though Haiti was very successful in its own and Franceââ¬â¢s economical endeavours, the strategy used was somewhat detriment as they applied brutal measures to the enslaved who worked on their plantations. According to Liberties Lost: Caribbean Indigenous Societies and Slave Systems written by Hilary McD Beckles and Verene A. Shepherd, it was the background of the civil war between the free mixed race and French communities and their mutual opposition to French domination, that those enslaved on the 22nd of August 1791, launched the greatest revolt for freedom from slavery ever known.Due to the revolt that lasted for thirteen long years, there was mass destruction in property, plantations and loss of many lives. These resulted in the break down of the socio-economic structure and further more the economy. This research will address the socio-economic state of Haiti or previously known as ââ¬ËSt. Domingueââ¬â¢ prior to the revolt and the factors that contributed to the deterioratio n of its socio-economic break down which will be used to prove that it was the Haitian Revolution that destroyed theà French colony. Management Team Essay
Many scholars believe that ââ¬Å"there is a strong connection between the growth potential of a venture and the quality of its management teamâ⬠, (Timmons and Spinelli, 2009). Describe what is meant by ââ¬Å"management teamâ⬠philosophy and attitude of entrepreneurial ventures that will eventually contribute to business venture growth? From Collins dictionaries the management team is defined as ââ¬Å"a team of managers in charge of direction a company, business, etc. Wikipedia define the management team as ââ¬Å"senior management, executive management, or management team is generally a team of individuals at the highest level of organizationalâ⬠. For general definition, management team is a set of peoples that come from various function or responsibility that responsible to manage the organization. ââ¬Å"there is a strong connection between the growth potential of a venture and the quality of its management teamâ⬠, (Timmons and Spinelli, 2009). To relate this statement, I had found some statement from (Krishnan et al. 1997, p. 363). Differences between the top management teams on important dimensions such as backgrounds of managers has more potential to create unique value because it makes the combined organization stronger by offsetting weaknesses in both firms, thereby creating or maintaining a competitive advantage I also refer to www. jeffcobizjournal. com that mentioned about ââ¬Å"a bad manager will make bad decisions, will hurt the morale of the employees and your relationship with customers, you canââ¬â¢t afford to keep them aroundâ⬠. This situation can give impact the organization directly, so it is really importance to have good quality of management team in order to ensure growth potential to organization business. This idea clearly directed the right people for the right jobs its crucial during the selecting the management team in the organization. Cited from the Marriott management philosophy ââ¬Å"ââ¬â¢A business succeeds not because it is long established or because it is big, but because there are men and women in it who live it, sleep it, dream it, and build great future plans for it. â⬠Robinson Finkelstein, Hambrick, and Cannella (2009: 3) wrote, ââ¬Å"The small group of people at the top of an organization can dramatically affect organizational outcomes. Becker (1964), training and wages for experiences and skilled managers can be seen as a firmââ¬â¢s investment in human capital, expecting to benefit from higher productivity and added economic value. From this statement we can relate the bad impact of the small group of people to it is because of the individual factor also. Research shows that effective communication in a team is a critical factor determining team performance (Hitt, et al. 2006). Robinson et al. found that an entrepreneurial attitude orientation scale significantly differentiated between entrepreneurs and non-entrepreneurs. Therefore, it is mentioned that: attitude towards entrepreneurship is a function of the demographic and psychological characteristics and their interaction. Baum, Locke and Smith (2001) reported significant correlations between self-efficacy and venture growth, Douglas and Shepherd (2005) define entrepreneurial capital as the composite of the individualââ¬â¢s entrepreneurial attitudes and abilities. Entrepreneurial attitudes are those toward autonomy, risk, work, income and (other net) perquisites, while entrepreneurial abilities include opportunity recognition, viability screening, and creative problem solving skills. Hofer and Sandberg (Summer 1987), stated there are three factors have a substantial impact on a new ventureââ¬â¢s performance. In order of importance, these factors affecting new venture success are (1) the structure of the industry entered, (2) the new ventureââ¬â¢s business strategy, and (3) behavioral characteristics of the entrepreneur. My focus will be on the behavioral characteristics of entrepreneur. Sources from K. Axelton, ââ¬Å"Fever Pitch,â⬠Entrepreneur (December 2004), p. 74; N. L. Torres, ââ¬Å"Think Outside the Box,â⬠Entrepreneur (February 2004), pp. 108ââ¬â111; A. Pennington, ââ¬Å"Una Cassidy,â⬠Entrepreneur (November 2003), p. 24 found four entrepreneurial characteristics are key to a new ventureââ¬â¢s success. Successful entrepreneurs have: 1) the ability to identify potential venture opportunities better than most people. 2) a sense of urgency that makes them action oriented, 3) switch the niche, 4) borrow a business model.

Service Report - Essay Example In this manner, people begin to want certain things and end up saving for them. After the purchase thus, if the product ends up not suiting their needs, it forms a void and unhappiness with respect to their purchase. The product thus loses its goodwill eventually as well. The objective of this paper is to underline two incidents regarding a good and a bad choice of purchase during the last year and comprehending the gap analysis of the companies with respect to the same in order to understand the discrepancies faced with the usage of the product. During the last year, a memorable product that I purchased was the iPhone 4; this phone had been released after a heavy bout of advertising and proclamations, over various sources of media and networking. Most people were excited about the launch of the iPhone because of the high class that it possessed. Its application and music market had already begun to soar in the good books of the consumers and thus there were thousands of pre orders given for the purchase of the iPhone on the very day that it would be launched. After conducting months of research and waiting for the phone to come out, I too was excited and hoped for the best for the release because of the expenses that I was putting into the same. Having saved up for a long time, the phone was finally in my reach and did not disappoint me one bit. Almost every service related to the phone exceeded expectations and the distributors and retailers selling the phone also provided excellent consumer services. All this added up to an extremely pleasant consumer purchase on my part and to date I am very happy with my phone because of the many things that it can do. On the other hand, I went ahead and bought a Blackberry 9360 recently in order to keep up to date with contacts belonging to the Blackberry Messenger world. This

Tajomaru, being the chief figure whom the old woman testified as responsible on committing murder against her son-in-law and possibly her lost daughter, initially confessed of his modesty at having considered not to kill Takehiko, partly taking pride that to him ââ¬Å"killing isnââ¬â¢t a matter of such great consequenceâ⬠. He further reasoned that ââ¬Å"it would be good if I could capture a woman without killing her manâ⬠and at this point, it were as if Tajomaru would like to be understood in the light of justice whereby despite his capacity for robbery, he was not as greedy as to take someone elseââ¬â¢s without a sensible cause so he can be relieved of brutal judgments. On the contrary, the wife made the preference of being held accountable for her husbandââ¬â¢s demise for she wanted to spare Takejiro of witnessing her disgrace in the look that spoke of his heart in profound hatred. She could no longer stand the exchange of mixed strong unpleasant emotions of shame, grief, and anger between them particularly on account of enduring the contempt in the stare given by her husband. So she necessitated thrusting the small sword through his breast. Similarly, the murdered man took his own position in the story as revealed by another medium stating conformity to the womanââ¬â¢s betrayal as he witnessed the robber and his wife hand-in-hand where

Inequality in society Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Inequality in society - Essay Example What he does not elaborate is on the manner of exploitation that he claims life offers. Pope, on his part, agrees that there exists equality in life and goes on to expound on those that an individual is born with. He asserts that the inequality that life offers depends on the scope of life that one is taking. The success of life, according to him, is relative and thus the relativity of the inequalities. What one considers success would not be success to the other thus the disparity. However, he agrees with the fact that the elements that aid one achieve that which he or she would consider success vary amongst individuals. Francois-Marie Aroet deVoltaire in most of his works also points out though very briefly on the subject of equality. According to him, each individual deserves that which he or she gets. He groups individuals in categories, and these he argues that life has a way of grouping people then offering them equal opportunity to succeed or fail. His first argument is on cla ss where he implies that an individual simply walks to school not knowing who he is likely to meet there. Once there a class of forty or so, students are attended to by similar teachers and what comes out of them at the end of the ten or so years of a course solely depend on how well they had made use of the equal opportunity life offered them at the beginning (Brumfitt 58). In pre medieval society when life had not been stratified as it is today and there was no formal system of education, Voltaire argues that there still belonged pre medieval ways of life grouping people. These were either in the age groups or sets and he insists that even in the modern society, a personââ¬â¢s success is compared against that of his peers. Rousseauââ¬â¢s Discourse on Inequality Jean Jacques Rousseau starts his discourse by putting a claim that there are two types of inequality which are natural or physical and ethical or political. According to him, these are the inequalities in life that ma ke one individual who was at a similar level with his peers all of a sudden appear to have jumped two or three stages in life. First, he begins by stating that the society is stratified. The stratification he asserts to are the social societal divisions where there are low income earners who belong to the lower class of the society. This is preceded by the middle class which is composed of average earners who are people who are not very rich in the society but they would not lack a basic need and some even afford some elements of luxury. The low class is made up of individuals who struggle to make ends meet, their main priority revolve around the meeting of the three basic needs and most of these people live lives of abject want. At the top of this class societal stratification system are the rich and the wealthy who are referred to as belonging to the first class. Most members of this group are political leaders and business men who he later refers to as capitalist. On natural ineq uality, he begins by stating is found in the disparities of each manââ¬â¢s physical strength. Some people are stronger than others and this would go a long way in determining the success level of the person, and in the long run determine which of the societyââ¬â¢s class he finds himself. The strong can use force to take away belongings of the weak and this was evident in the pre medieval times when Alexander the great nearly conquered the whole world because of his military strength.
